Bruno Fernandes 'rejected Saudi offer' in January – but club could return for Man Utd transfer

A poor season for Manchester United could have been even worse had club captain Bruno Fernandes accepted an 'astronomical' offer of a January transfer to Saudi Arabia

Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes is among the latest high-profile Premier League stars being targeted by Saudi Arabia.

The Portugal playmaker is understood to have turned down a massive offer to ditch Old Trafford in favour of a move to the Middle East. However, the problem isn't set to go away just yet amid talk Saudi Pro League leaders Al-Hilal will make another attempt to land the midfielder in the summer.

That's according to a report from Portuguese outlet Record, which suggested Jorge Jesus is very interested in a reunion with his former charge. Jesus, 69, briefly managed Fernandes at Sporting CP prior to his first stint in Riyadh, and he's now seemingly intent on another spell as colleagues in luxurious surroundings.

Like many among the current crop of stars at Old Trafford, Fernandes has struggled to consistently show his best for United this season. However, a return of seven goals and six assists from 30 outings thus far in his debut campaign as captain demonstrate he's still an essential component under Erik ten Hag.

The 29-year-old has a contract in Manchester until the summer of 2026, with the option to extend by another year should both parties agree. However, interest from Saudi Arabia may be one of United's few options of recovering a bulk of their initial outlay on the player should they decide to cash in.

That being said, Fernandes is still in the midst of his prime years and hoping to come good once more amid a resurgence at the Theatre of Dreams. Rasmus Hojlund has finally started to find his feet in the Premier League, while Marcus Rashford looked closer to his old self in Thursday's dramatic 4-3 win at Wolves.

Al-Hilal have arguably the most pulling power of any Saudi club, with the likes of Neymar (currently injured), Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Ruben Neves, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Kalidou Koulibaly already on their books. The club are seven points clear at the top of the Pro League for the time being, having won five of the last seven titles on offer.

It would be another unwelcome blow to United and Ten Hag if his latest captain were to be the one pushing for a move later this year. However, it's reported Fernandes is focused on fixing things at Old Trafford as he feels he has "unfinished business" to conclude with his current club.
