Chelsea's 1-1 draw at Manchester City threw a spanner in the title race as Raheem Sterling rose to strike against his former team for the second time this season

Chelsea earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Manchester City thanks in part to ex-City star Raheem Sterling's first half strike.

In what was a thrilling night of Premier League action on Saturday (February 17), Pep Guardiola's side were silenced at the Etihad Stadium minutes away before half-time thanks to Sterling's second goal against his former club this season.

While City dominated possession, Mauricio Pochettino's team were lethal thanks to counter-attacks in a crucial result that once again makes for a topsy-turvy title race. In what was a less-than-impressive performance from City, they managed to level the scoring with 10 minutes to go thanks to an important strike from Rodri.

The performance and result for Chelsea was an encouraging one in the leadup to their EFL Cup final clash with Liverpool next Sunday as Daily Star Sport breaks down what Pochettino did right to claim a vital draw on enemy territory.

Starting Raheem Sterling

It hasn't been the vintage Raheem Sterling that has turned up for Chelsea for much of the season but he certainly remains one of their best players and an invaluable member of Mauricio Pochettino's squad due to his experience and quality.

While he could enjoy a 10-minute cameo in Chelsea's 3-1 win against Crystal Palace this past Monday (February 12), he started from the off against his former side as he opened the scoring with a smooth finish past Ederson Moraes.

Keeping faith in Nicolas Jackson

The Senegalese striker is far from the finished product but he's no doubt a favourite of Mauricio Pochettino and it's easy to understand why.

With Chelsea opting for a counter-attack strategy at the Etihad Stadium, Jackson's ability to play with his back to goal and link up with his team-mates were keys to success for Chelsea while his never-say-die attitude consistently kept City's backline on their toes.

Fans must remember Jackson is still in his first season in England and while it's not been an instant adapt to life in the Premier League, there are certain attributes of the 22-year-old's game that you can't teach.

Among the several issues Chelsea have been dealing with this season, their defensive fragility has been perhaps the greatest crutch, having conceded 40 goals in just 25 league games.

After conceding a whopping eight goals in their two hefty defeats to Liverpool and Wolves, the Blues' backline has improved as of late with Axel Disasi putting in a man of the match performance against Man City.

The Frenchman made various tackles, clearances, and challenges but were unfortunately undone thanks to Rodri's equaliser that was helped by a deflection off Trevoh Chalobah.
