The two dirtiest matches in Premier League history both took place this season - and a third match from this campaign has also made its way into the top 10

Tough-tackling isn't necessarily a thing of the past – or at least the dirtiest matches in Premier League history would suggest.

The top two spots are actually occupied by matches that happened this season – Brentford's clash with Aston Villa and Liverpool's trip to Tottenham Hotspur. Brentford and Villa played out the dirtiest Premier League match in history in December, with 10 yellow cards and two straight reds.

Ben Mee's red card allowed Villa back into the game, with Ollie Watkins grabbing a late winner – and then sending Brentford fans furious with his provocative celebration in the goal net. Tensions boiled over as scuffles constantly broke out in the ill-tempered affair.

Boubacar Kamara was sent off in the 97th minute, rounding off the ten bookings and both managers being cautioned by the referee. September's clash between Liverpool and Spurs was second - in a game that was overshadowed by Luis Diaz's disallowed goal.

The referee, Simon Hooper, gave a total of five yellow cards to each team throughout the game. Diogo Jota of Liverpool received a second yellow for a bad foul, followed by another red card for the visitors shown to Curtis Jones in the second half.

The data was gathered by OnlineCasinos365, and a spokesperson said: "It is fascinating to see which games were the dirtiest, especially with four out of ten being in 2023.

"It will be interesting to see whether 2024 has any more aggressive games in store, or whether players will stick to the rules ahead of the Euros."

One other game from this year made the list: Manchester City's clash with Nottingham Forest in September when referee Anthony Taylor gave a total of one red card and eleven yellow cards. Rodri was the man who received the red for violent conduct just after half-time.
