Arsenal have struck an agreement with Crystal Palace and Eberechi Eze over a £68million move to the Emirates, hijacking Tottenham's pursuit of the England midfielder

Arsenal have swooped in to snatch Eberechi Eze from under Tottenham's nose, agreeing to meet Crystal Palace's asking price and settling terms with the midfielder.

The Gunners have long admired Eze but had recently cooled their interest, seemingly paving the way for Spurs to secure his signature. However, an injury to Kai Havertz has prompted a sudden re-entry into the race for the England international.

Havertz sat out Wednesday's training due to a knee problem, and while Arsenal are still assessing the extent of the issue, they've acted swiftly in the transfer market. Initially considering a move for Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers, they've now decisively turned their attention to Eze.

Palace chairman Steve Parish and Tottenham's Daniel Levy have been in negotiations over Eze, but Arsenal have now stolen a march on them. Eze, who spent time at Arsenal's academy, has always favoured a move to the Gunners, which proved pivotal.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal, who initially baulked at the £68million asking price, have now signalled their willingness to match the release clause in Eze's contract that expired on Friday.

Arsenal's sporting director Andrea Berta and vice-chairman Tim Lewis moved quickly to strike a deal, which will see Eze undergo a medical after playing one last game for Palace in their Conference League play-off match against Fredrikstad on Thursday, reports the Mirror.

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank is eager to inject some creativity into his team following the serious knee injury suffered by James Maddison. However, Palace's insistence on holding off any deals until after their Conference League play-off match ultimately thwarted their plans.

Spurs seemed increasingly frantic on Wednesday evening as rumours surfaced that they were prepared to offer Richarlison in a swap deal for Eze.

The Daily Mail suggested that Frank was ready to part ways with the forward who netted twice in their 3-0 victory over Burnley at the weekend, before attempting to replace him with Brentford's Yoane Wissa, who has been the target of unsuccessful bids from Newcastle.

However, this speculative scenario proved unfruitful, with Arsenal outmanoeuvring their rivals to secure the signature of one of the Premier League's most thrilling talents.

The Gunners have already splashed out over £200m to bring in Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

They've found it difficult to offload surplus players, but Havertz's injury has left them short in the attacking department, forcing their hand.

Eze has clocked up 167 appearances for Palace since his £17m move from Queens Park Rangers in 2020. The 27-year-old is keen to return to Arsenal, the club he supported as a youngster, where he'll have the chance to compete in the Champions League and potentially vie for the Premier League title.
