Non-league Macclesfield have earned FA Cup glory by knocking out holders and Premier League club Crystal Palace in the third round in stunning scenes at Moss Rose

Macclesfield FC have completed a stunning FA Cup upset over Crystal Palace and knocked the holders out in the third round of the competition.

The Silkmen's 2-1 win marks the competition's biggest upset, with 117 places separating the sides in the football pyramid. Goals from Paul Dawson and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts produced a historic occasion at Moss Rose, earning the National League North side a place in the fourth round, with Oliver Glasner's Premier League side struggling to respond on either side of half-time.

The likes of England internationals Marc Guehi and Adam Wharton started for the Premier League team. It wasn't until the 90th minute that Palace were able to put Macclesfield under pressure. The tension ratcheted up after Yeremy Pino scored a late free kick.

That was released after more than seven minutes of stoppage time as supporters flooded the pitch and lifted Macclesfield's stars upon their shoulders. Relations were frostier as Guehi talked with Palace's travelling support.

Wayne Rooney, working for BBC, struggled to hold back his tears discussing the win, with his brother, John Rooney, in charge of the victors. The pair enjoyed an emotional embrace as the latter conducted a post-match interview.

"It's incredible to see my younger brother achieve this, he has not long been the manager," said former Manchester United star Rooney. "I am so proud of him."

John could scarcely believe what his side achieved. "I can't believe it, we never thought we would be in this position," he said at full time.

"We were incredible from the first minute. I thought we were deserved winners. I couldn't be any prouder of the lads. I couldn't have asked any more of them and you can see the joy in them."

The manager had special praise for man of the match, Dawson. "Dawson is one of them, he is unbelievable in the air," he added.

"He scores goals from the field and can play centre half, he puts his head where his goals are. He has that passion and sometimes we have to rein him in a bit but he was incredible today. He is a class clown.

"I didn't think it was possible but there is that little bit of hope that anything can happen on the day."

Ex-England goalkeeper Paul Robinson was in awe of the result. "The greatest cup competition in the world provides another piece of incredible history in front of our eyes," he said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Macclesfield fans young and old have been waiting years for this. Every single one of these players put in a special performance today.

"The current FA Cup holders have gone out to Macclesfield, a team that trains twice a week. You cannot underplay the enormity of this giant killing."

Stephen Warnock was equally impressed. "We have just witnessed one of the greatest moments in FA Cup history," he said. "They showed quality. What a day for Macclesfield and what a day for those players."
