Boozy England fans drink two months worth of beer in two days at German bar
England fans were able to make their way through two months of beer at one Italian restaurant in Gelsenkirchen after partied into the early hours of Monday morning
Boozy England fans made their way through an impressive two months' worth of beer in two days at a German restaurant – in what was its busiest weekend since 2006.
The Three Lions' Euros party is in full swing after Gareth Southgate's side got their tournament underway on Sunday (June 16). Reports suggest around 40,000 England fans descended on Gelsenkirchen for the Euro 2024 opener against Serbia.
And many of them stopped for a quick pint at GE Piazza in the city's German old town. England fans waded their way through 7,500 pints on matchday, with owner claiming it was their busiest weekend since 2006.
Umit Yavuz, 43, told The Mirror: "This is as busy as we’ve been for a long, long time. Probably since the last time England played in Gelsenkirchen in 2006. But back then there were more pubs and bars in the city so this time around everyone has come here.
"I put on an England shirt to entice the supporters in. It’s always a popular move. I also put up flags for all the countries playing in the Euros outside the bar. I think that’s why we’ve been so popular.”
He added the restaurant had gone through 60 kegs in just over 36 hours - compared to the two they would normally go through in a weekend.
Gelsenkirchen isn't known for its nightlife - and it doesn't boast beerhalls like Munich or the famous club of Berlin. And that led England fans to the Italian restaurant which is located just away from the main square.
Umit added: "We have Italy and Spain playing in Gelsenkirchen next, I hope their fans join us for the party too. However, they won’t drink anywhere near as much as the English. England really likes to drink!"
