Chelsea loan star Ethan Ampadu couldn't believe it as he was sent off for making a perfectly good challenge on former Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery while playing for Venezia in Serie A

Chelsea loan star Ethan Ampadu was left feeling blue on Tuesday as he was sent off despite making a perfectly clean tackle.

Ampadu, 21, is on loan at Serie A side Venezia for the season, his third spell away from Stamford Bridge in the last three years.

The Welshman made his fifth appearance for the Italian minnows in Tuesday's 2-1 home defeat to Salernitana, coming on as a substitute in the 60th minute.

Little over five minutes after coming on, and with the score tied at 1-1, former Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery pounced on a loose ball just outside Venezia’s penalty area.

Alert to the danger, having let the ball run across him, Ampadu stuck a leg out in a last-gasp attempt to win the ball.

The defender appeared to win it fair and square, but referee Marco di Bello saw things differently as Ribery rolled around on the floor.

He immediately blew his whistle and ran over towards Ampadu before brandishing a red card, sending the youngster off for only the second time in his career.

The Wales international and his team-mates looked stunned at the decision which, in the end, altered the complexion of the match.

A man short, Venezia were unable to hold on for a 1-1 draw as Salernitana scored a winner in the 95th minute.

The result moved the visitors off the bottom of the Serie A table and to within one point of Venezia in 16th.

Chelsea fans could not get their head around the decision to send off Ampadu, with some calling it the worst red card of all-time.

One person said: "No way a red, brilliant tackle, absolute horrendous decision."

Another wrote: "Terrible decision, wasn’t a red at all."

A third supporter added: "Such a terrible call and then VAR still didn’t help. That’s not even a foul let alone a red."

Someone else added: "Venezia's Ethan Ampadu was shown a red card for this challenge. One of the worst red cards I’ve ever seen, what is this?!"

Others called it "bizarre" and claimed that the referee "needed sacking."

Ampadu's latest loan spell is his third way from Chelsea, with the former Exeter City prodigy also spending time at RB Leipzig and Sheffield United.

Despite being ranked among one of the Blues' hottest prospects, he has played just 12 times for his parent club, with his last game coming three seasons ago.
