Denmark warns Trump to stay away from Greenland after taking over Venezuela
Donald Trump has seized control of Venezuela in a stunning military raid, with the country's president Nicolas Maduro being captured and taken to the US to face trial
Denmark has delivered a stern "hands off" warning to US President Donald Trump, following his assault on Venezuela and amid concerns that Greenland could be his next target. Delta force soldiers raided the residence of Venezuela's dictator Nicolas Maduro during the early hours of Saturday morning (January 3), seizing him along with his wife, Cilia Flores.
The Venezuelan President is now being held in custody in the US, where he faces trial on narcotics and arms charges. Following the raid, Trump declared that the South American nation would remain under US control for the foreseeable future.
The forcible removal of Maduro has stunned political figures worldwide, whilst thrilling his MAGA base.
The military intervention has reignited concerns in Denmark about an American seizure of Greenland, a territory long desired by the US President. These anxieties were heightened by a social media message from the spouse of Trump's deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller, posted mere hours after Maduro's capture.
Katie Miller - a right-wing podcaster - shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) an image of Greenland covered in the stars and stripes with the message: "SOON". Her inflammatory post triggered an angry response from the Danish ambassador to the United States.
Jesper Møller Sørensen reshared Miller's provocation with a "friendly reminder" about the established defence partnership between the two nations. He stated: "We are close allies and should continue to work together as such.
"US security is also Greenland's and Denmark's security. Greenland is already part of NATO.
"The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to ensure security in the Arctic. The Kingdom of Denmark has significantly boosted its Arctic security efforts - in 2025 alone, we committed USD 13,7 bn that can be used in the Arctic and North Atlantic.
"Because we take our joint security seriously. And yes, we expect full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark."
Since assuming office a year ago, Trump has unsettled European allies with his persistent calls for Greenland to be handed over to the US.
He has declined to dismiss the possibility of military intervention to seize control of the territory whilst the US, China and Russia compete for dominance in the Arctic, reports the Express.
Greenland is regarded as strategically vital for defence purposes and as a potential source of mineral riches. The island operates as an autonomous nation within the Kingdom of Denmark.
