Doctor says King Charles' 'sausage fingers' have 'got worse' as new pics show red digits
EXCLUSIVE: The fingers of our monarch have seemingly become even fatter based on images emerging from his state visit to Germany. Now a doctor has narrowed the focus on what might be causing it
King Charles’s fat fingers appear to have become even chunkier in images from his visit to Germany, according to an expert.
A doctor has now weighed in and said that while they don’t think the King’s condition has changed, they do think it looks like it has got worse.
Dr Gareth Nye previously spoke about the strange red and swollen nature of the monarch’s digits claiming it could be a number of different conditions.
But, given the extended time in which the King’s fingers have been so meaty, he has ruled out two of his earlier theories about what it could have been.
He has also conceded that the remaining candidate, arthritis, now looks more likely and indeed appears to have worsened.
Speaking to the Daily Star he said: “King Charles has always been known to have large fingers and previous suggestions for the possible causes away from his individual anatomy included oedema which is where fluid leaks out of the blood and stays within the tissues nearby leading to a swollen appearance."
He explained that one of the conditions initially possible could now be ruled out because it seemed the King's fingers had become worse and had been swollen for too long.
Dr Nye said: “Although King Charles's fingers are swollen, I do not feel that in this case oedema is the [the correct diagnosis] due to the length of time they have been like this in addition to the apparent worsening of the situation.”
He also went some way to scratch another possibility from the list.
Dr Nye continued: “Nor do I feel that gout is the cause. Although gout does impact on the hands and is a condition where small crystals formed of uric acid develop in the space between joints leading to pain, redness and swelling, this condition normally impacts individual joints.
“The images here suggest the whole hand is involved which doesn’t agree with the diagnosis of gout.”
Then, explaining what this reasoning led him to, he concluded: “The most likely cause here is as it was 6 months ago and that King Charles is suffering with arthritis in the hands which seems to be worsening with time.
“Arthritis is an extremely common condition in people over 60 however can be extremely debilitating and can limit movement of the impacted joints.
“Although treatments and medications can help the condition, ultimately it will get worse over time.
“This is particularly true in joints that are used more frequently which we can agree the hand is one.
“The condition most commonly associated with swollen fingers is Dactylitis which again is most commonly seen in those with arthritis.
“Dactylitis is unique as the swelling remains even if the underlying inflammation is controlled which is likely what we see here.”
But while he was keen to point out that this isn’t a life-threatening condition, he noted that it was likely to be something the King was well aware of.
“Although this condition doesn’t lead me to believe anything sinister is underlying the King, it doesn’t mean the condition is something to be ignored and I'm sure King Charles is fully aware of the cause of finger issues,” he said.
