England won the U21 Euros for the second time in succession as Lee Carsley's side battled to a deserved triumph over Germany after extra-time in a thrilling final watched by Thomas Tuchel

England have beaten Germany 3-2 after extra-time to win the U21 Euros.

Lee Carsley’s young Lions had their sights on a second successive U21 Euros triumph and got off to the perfect start when Harvey Elliott found the back of the net after just five minutes.

England pushed on and eventually added a second after coming close a number of times minutes before. Omari Hutchinson fired home from just inside the penalty box to set the Three Lions on their way after 24 minutes.

But England were unable to make it into half-time with their two-goal lead intact as a bullet header from Nelson Weiper in first-half added time was too powerful for James Beadle to keep out.

After growing into the game in the second half, Germany levelled through Paul Nebel’s deflected strike shortly after the hour mark.

Immediately after the goal, England began to wrestle control back and looked the side most likely to find a late winner, but it never came, with Germany coming the closest as everyone in the stadium held their breath as Nebel's deflected effort cannoned back off the bar.

England's walking wound of Elliott and McAtee had to be withdrawn before extra-time started, but their impact was picked up immediately by Marseille's Jonathan Rowe, who stooped low to guide a header into the far corner just a minute in extra-time with his first touch.

The game was watched with a keen eye by Thomas Tuchel, who has just over a year before he leads England at the World Cup in North America next summer.

Tuchel would have had plenty of players to take a closer look at to potentially put themselves in contention for a seat on the plane.

Here, the Daily Star Sport looks at the players Tuchel will be watching intently next season.
Harvey Elliott

England’s star of the tournament, Elliott, followed up his brace against the Netherlands in the semi-final by opening the scoring with his fifth goal of the tournament.

But Elliott hasn’t, and doesn’t look likely to enjoy much success at Liverpool under Arne Slot, who gave the 22-year-old his only two Premier League starts of the season after the title was already won.

Elliott has been linked with a £40million move to Brighton, and the Seagulls could be the perfect place for him to kick on and finally force his way into the senior squad in time for the World Cup next summer.

With Florian Wirtz arriving at Anfield for a British record fee and Dominik Szoboszlai already keeping him out of the team, Elliott needs to ditch the club he has supported since he was a boy.

James McAtee

The captain almost put England 2-0 up before the 15 minute mark after a superb piece of control on the half volley, but he did then assist Omari Hutchinson to double England’s lead and came an inch away from putting the young Lions back in front after a Messi-esque run.

Now 22, McAtee will be hoping to make a similar impact that his former Manchester City academy team-mate Cole Palmer has done for Chelsea and England.

But in order to do that, he needs to leave City. Stifled by the abundance of attacking quality Pep Guardiola has in his team, made stronger by the arrival of Rayan Cherki.

Having started just three Premier League games last season and not travelling with City to the Club World Cup this summer, McAtee must find a move away from the Etihad to see his career bloom.

Omari Hutchinson

One player who took the leap of faith to find regular first-team minutes at a young age, Hutchinson left Chelsea to join Ipswich last summer after helping the Tractor Boys to Championship promotion the season before.

Hutchinson made 30 starts but was unable to save Ipswich from the drop. The 21-year-old is yet to sort a move back to the Premier League for next season, and potentially a place in Tuchel’s World Cup squad.

Capable of playing on either wing and behind the striker, Hutchinson showed his finishing instinct as he netted England’s second while being a constant threat throughout the tournament.

With Tuchel wanting his wingers to be direct, there are not many more direct than Hutchinson in full swing.
Elliot Anderson

A player who looks destined to have a future in senior international football, the Nottingham Forest man will count himself incredibly unlucky he has played in this tournament instead of joining up with the first-team earlier this month.

Since arriving at Forest, Anderson has been impressive in the centre of midfield with the youngster who found most of his minutes at Newcastle and on loan at Bristol Rovers coming out wide or from behind the striker.

But the 22-year-old has revolutionised his game, now holding down a defensive and combative midfield role for both Forest and Carsley this month.

Playing 37 games for a Forest team who punched well above their weight, Anderson could be the key to England finding balance in the midfield to accommodate the plethora of attacking options.

Jack Hinshelwood

While Tino Livramento is already firmly on the radar of every Premier League fan, Brighton’s Jack Hinshelwood continues to impress in a role that is quickly becoming the norm at full-back.

The 20-year-old has largely been thought of as a centre-midfielder, but his ability to play left-back and right-back has been utilised by both Fabian Hurzeler and Carsley.

Hinshelwood will be hoping to kick on next season and with Tuchel seemingly having reservations at both centre midfield and full-back, with soon-to-be 36-year-old Jordan Henderson recalled to the squad and Reece James playing out of position on the left, Hinshelwood has every chance of landing himself a spot on the plane.
