OPINION: Thomas Tuchel has explained why Jude Bellingham was left out of the England squad and the sound of the Real Madrid star's ego popping will be deafening

The sound of Jude Bellingham's ego popping will be deafening - while sending shock tremors between London and Madrid.

Thomas Tuchel has axed England's pin-up superstar from his latest squad. And he deserves huge kudos for having the courage to bring Bellingham down a peg or two.

One phone call was all it took for Tuchel to remind the Real Madrid sensation that no-one gets special treatment. That there is no 'I' in team. That reputations guarantee zilch when it comes to earning the right to represent the Three Lions.

"The last camp was only three-and-a-half weeks ago," said Tuchel. "Teamwork and team spirit were at the highest level so far. That's why we decided to invite the same group into this camp, to make more stable what we started to build."

In short, Tuchel is making it clear how England thrived without Bellingham in their last camp. It ended with a thumping win in Serbia.

But the background to Bellingham and his relationship with England and Tuchel is much more complicated.

There has been a growing feeling within the squad that Bellingham acts like the captain - even though he isn't.

Tuchel himself has admitted Bellingham can even intimidate team-mates because of his over-aggressive manner.

One source with inside knowledge of the England camp has even claimed that a certain player dislikes Bellingham, and struggles to get on with him.

Then there is the added backdrop of how much influence the midfielder's dad Mark Bellingham has on the England set-up.

Bellingham senior has an open dislike of the written media. For reasons no-one knows but him.

His alleged controlling behaviour has become a major problem within the FA, who have struggled to keep the bloke on a short leash.

Gareth Southgate never had the bottle to drop Bellingham from his starting XI, let alone his squad.

But Tuchel takes no prisoners. He will not stomach those who sometimes act with an attitude of self-entitlement.

Tuchel will take Bellingham to the World Cup next summer. But he wants someone boarding the plane who can bring the best out in those around him.

Instead of being someone who shows them disdain, because he believes he's better than them.
