England’s Lionesses could still be knocked out in the group stage despite winning both their Women's World Cup games so far against Haiti and Denmark

England’s Lionesses could still miss out on the knockout stages despite winning both of their group-stage games so far.

The Lionesses have beaten Haiti and Denmark both 1-0 in their opening two group-stage games in Group D of the Women’s World Cup.

A first-half Georgia Stanway penalty was enough for a dominant England side to get their campaign off to a winning start. Lauren James’ sixth minute strike against Denmark then proved to be the difference on Friday.

But given Sarina Wiegman’s side's slim victories, they’ve left the door open to be caught if they lose to China in the final group game.

If China beat the Lionesses on Tuesday, then they will finish above England both on goal difference and goals scored, with those being the first two tiebreakers should a team finish level on points.

An England defeat would then leave the door open for Denmark, who will draw level on six points should they beat the only winless side in the group Haiti.

Denmark would at least draw level on goal difference with a two-goal gap heading into the final game, as well on goals scored with the Danes only scoring one less so far.

Should the points, goal difference and goals scored between England and Denmark be equal, then the Lionesses will go through due to their head-to-head record being the next tiebreaker rank.

Whilst England remain in control of the game and their knockout stage qualification, it remains to be seen whether Keira Walsh will feature again in this tournament after scans revealed she did not suffer an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Denmark despite fears of the worst.

The midfielder will definitely miss the Lionesses’ final group game against China but she has remained in Australia where she will undergo further assessment ahead of a potential return in the knockout stages.
