The 20-year-old volleyball star was travelling on a motorway with her mum when a Porsche slammed into their car, before she died in hospital with her heartbroken footballer boyfriend at her bedside

A footballer has been left devastated after his sports star girlfriend was killed when her car was hit by an alleged illegal racer in a Porsche 911.

Francesco Tozaj remained by the side of his partner, Matilde Baldi, in hospital as she battled for her life for five days. The semi-pro striker, who plays for San Domenico Savio Asti, based near Turin, said his 20-year-old partner "saved 10 lives by donating her organs" after her death.

Professional volleyball star Matilde was travelling with her mother in her Fiat 500 near her hometown of Asti near Turin in Italy. Their vehicle was suddenly smashed into by a Porsche 911 GT3 with German license plates, according to reports. CCTV images showed the driver was seemingly racing with another Porsche owner on the A33 motorway at the time of the crash.

Matilde, who worked as a barista in the Nuovo Borgo Shopping Centre in Asti, suffered a serious head injury in the incident, which happened at around 8.30pm on December 11.

After five days fighting for her life, she passed away on Tuesday (December 16), as reported by NeedToKnow. Her mum is said to have suffered serious injuries but is recovering in hospital.

Tozaj, 24, said he has been left heartbroken by his girlfriend's sudden passing. He said: "I don't even want to know who killed her, because nothing will bring her back to me."

The footballer praised his girlfriend, who played volleyball for the PlayAsti team, as a "pure person". He said: "It's absurd that my Matilde died like this, in a road race, it makes me even more infuriated.

"She was a pure person, and she proved it even in death, saving 10 lives by donating her organs. I was the first one to arrive at the hospital, and I was by her side the whole time.

"I spoke to her; I hope she heard me before she died. The doctors told me that at least she didn't suffer."

Tozaj added: "I was very lucky to know her and spend almost four years with her. She was a beautiful girl, but her physical beauty was nothing compared to her inner beauty.

"She was pure, she cared for me, and over the years, we laid the foundation for a life together.

"We were trying to build it, and now she's gone because of a car race on the highway."

The driver of the Porsche that hit Matilde's car has been arrested, as the police continue to track down the other suspected racer.

Fans online paid tribute to Matilde and expressed their anger over her death. One wrote: "Inhuman tragedy. Make the roads safe." A second said: "Road homicide should be punishable by life imprisonment."

A third added: "Damn you, another innocent victim because of the usual imbeciles." And a fourth commented: "Shameful, an absolute disgrace."
