Juan Godoy had sent his fans into dreamland with a last-minute winner - but pleasure soon turned to pain when he was rewarded by being hit in the nether regions by a firework

A footballer's testicle terror was caused by his own fans after they launched a firework onto the pitch.

Juan Godoy had just netted the winner for The Strongest in their Bolivian Primera Division clash against Blooming, sending his fans into dreamland. However, Godoy's joy was short-lived when a firework exploded in his nether regions.

The firework, known as a llorona, was thrown by Godoy's own fans - not that he would have known as he grabbed his crotch in agony. He had to be helped off the pitch by a medic.

Reports from Bolivian outlet El Deber claim Godoy suffered a grade one thigh burn and a hematoma in the testicular area.

It adds that doctor also diagnosed him with an orchitis, an inflammation of the testicle.

Blame has fallen at the feet of The Strongest's ultras group UltraSur - who were protesting the club's ongoing ownership.

In a statement, they said: "We would like to address all our fans to express our sincere apologies for the events that occurred.

"It was never our intention to cause harm to any player or member of the coaching staff. We always seek to encourage and contribute, not to put anyone at risk."

The clip did the rounds on social media, as fans called out for harsh punishments: "Something that should been punished with not less than 1 year behind closed doors and 6 points deduction," one said.

"And some people wonder why flares and other pyrotechnics are banned in stadiums," a second replied. And another added: "Great balls of fire!"
