France have become the second team to win the Nations League, following Portugal's victory in 2018, after Karim Benzema's stunning equaliser and Kylian Mbappe's 'clearly offside' winner.

France have won the 2021 Nations League after they beat Spain 2-1.

Les Blues fell behind just after the hour mark when Mikel Oyarzabal weaved past the French defence to break the deadlock.

However, Spain's advantage didn't last long, and less than two minutes later Karim Benzema levelled the proceedings with a lovely curling effort from the edge of the box which nestled in the far top corner.

But controversy wasn't far from the clash, and the Spanish backline all deemed Kylian Mbappe to be offside when he bagged the winner in the 80th minute.

Mbappe was ruled onside after a VAR check to earn France the trophy.

However not all fans agreed that Mbappe was on side, and some voiced their displeasure on Twitter.

"How is that not offside? Mbappe is clearly ahead of any Spanish player as the ball is played," one fan fumed.

Another added: "WHAT THE F***!!! HOW DID THEY COUNT IT!! MBAPPE was clearly offside!! Another huge mistake with VAR!!!"

"How in the world did that Mbappe goal not given offside? Looked clear as day, surely we’re all missing something," a third added.

But The Athletic's Michael Cox was on hand to offer an explanation: "Presumably Mbappe onside as Spanish defender got a deliberate touch to it..? I don’t think this element of offside really makes sense."

Jamie Redknapp, who was working at Sky Sports as pundit, was in agreeance with fans.

Mbappe was feed through on goal, but Eric Garcia attempted to thwart the ball, diverting it in the process.

The former Tottenham midfielder felt Mbappe was lucky to be not ruled offside as Garcia played the ball back knowing he was in offside position.

However, the VAR officials disagreed with Redknapp, and the goal was ruled as onside.

What wasn't in dispute was Benzema's strike.

France showed grit as they immediately, like they did against Belgium in the semi-finals, came from behind to claim the match.

And the Real Madrid striker demonstrated his coolness to loop the ball over Unai Simon into the far corner of the Spanish net.

Benzema is back in the French squad after being cast into the wilderness for six years.

Spain attempted to rally after Mbappe's goal.

And Luis Enrique's side came close to scoring on numerous occasions as Les Blues lent on Hugo Lloris in the French goal.

Even Simon appeared in the French penalty area as the Spaniards desperately searched for an equaliser.

France now have a feeling of redemption after they were unceremoniously dumped out of Euro 2020 by Switzerland.

Les Blues have become the first team in history to win the World Cup, Euros, and Nations League.
