A group of seven players including two huge names have reportedly been told they will not be part of Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024 in Germany this summer

Gareth Southgate has reportedly decided to axe seven players from his Euro 2024 squad – with one not even on the list for the final friendly.

The England manager has reportedly decided to exclude Jack Grealish, Harry Maguire, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, James Trafford and Jarrad Branthwaite from his final squad for EURO 2024 in Germany. James Maddison has already left the squad ahead of Saturday's friendly against Iceland after being told he would be axed.

Manchester City's £100m man Grealish, injured Manchester United defender Maguire, the Liverpool duo, Spurs' star midfielder, Burnley goalkeeper and rising Everton defender were part of England's initial squad, with Southgate selecting 33 players to kick-start his preparations. The rules allow each nation to bring a 26-man squad to the tournament, meaning Southgate has to cut a total of seven players to make the final squa

Now, one more will have to face the bad news and exit the group before it heads to Germany on Monday morning (June 10). Maddison has been struggling for consistency since picking up an ankle injury while playing for Tottenham. His misfortune however boosted the hopes of Jarrod Bowen and Eberechi Eze.

Grealish was also expected to benefit from Maddison's exclusion, but he has had a mixed season at Manchester City, having struggled for fitness and finding that manager Pep Guardiola preferred others ahead of him. Veteran defender Maguire has been battling to be fit in time for the tournament, having been a mainstay of Southgate's England sides, but has lost the race against time after failing to recover from a calf injury.

England's campaign is due to kick off against Serbia in just 10 days and the final squad has to be submitted by 11pm on Friday night (June 7). It is anticipated that the final squad will be officially released by the FA on Saturday morning, presumably shortly before midday (June 8)

Southgate's larger group selection has allowed him to accommodate late arrivals from Manchester City and Manchester United, as their season was extended due to the FA Cup final. Jude Bellingham was also unable to join the squad immediately due to his participation in the Champions League final with Real Madrid.

This strategy had given Southgate time to monitor the fitness levels of players like Luke Shaw and Maguire. Shaw like his United team-mate has also been suffering with injury. It's worth noting that neither Jones nor Quansah featured in England's friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina, reports the Mirror.

Jones, 23, excelled for Liverpool in the first half of last season, only to struggle to regain his place after injury, while Quansah was an unexpected inclusion in the squad after breaking through into Jurgen Klopp's team at the age of just 21.

Branthwaite has had a great breakout year for Everton, but his lack of experience at international level appears to have counted against him. Meanwhile, Trafford, 21, was relegated with Burnley and not expected to make the final cut.

The tournament will run from June 14 to July 14, with the Three Lions set to take on Slovenia, Denmark and Serbia as they try and make it out of Group C.
