Helpless gran hoisted 10 feet by store shutters in viral clip dies at 73
Anne Hughes, 73, became something of a local celebrity after the viral clip was viewed by hundreds of millions of people on social media. She was regularly stopped by fans for selfies
A granny who went viral when she was hoisted ten feet into the air by a shop shutter has died. Anne Hughes, 73, was seen on CCTV waiting for a corner shop in Tonteg, near Pontypridd, South Wales to open in 2024.
The helpless woman was lifted into the air as she held onto her shopping trolley while shouting for help. The video of the incident was viewed by hundreds of millions of people across the globe when it was uploaded to social media.
Luckily, shop workers came to her rescue and Anne survived the scary ordeal without injury. The Welsh gran became a celebrity with fans regularly stopping her in the street for selfies.
Sadly, Anne became ill last year and died from cancer shortly before Christmas, the Daily Mail reported. A family friend told the publication: "Anne was lovely and, luckily for her and everyone else, she had a good sense of humour.
"She quite enjoyed her moment of notoriety and she definitely saw the funny side. It's sad that she's gone but she has left us with a memory that will always bring a smile to people's faces."
At the time of the 2024 incident, Anne saw the funny side. She said: "I was just standing there when my coat got caught and up I went. I thought flipping heck!
"People say it could happen to anyone, no, it could only happen to me! It's just lucky I've got a good sense of humour."
"I've been having falls for the past six months or so and the doctors at the hospital think it's from low blood pressure - it was going up then! I was lucky my coat didn't break because I didn't want to land on my face again."
The shop shared a video of the funny incident online, saying: "Don't hang about like Ann, come down to Best One to get the best deals!!! The only thing going up in this shop is our staff, not the prices!!"
Anne had been a cleaner at the popular village store for years. Her workmates said she found it funny when she saw the CCTV footage of her surprise with the shutter.
