A crane has collapsed during the construction of the Samruddhi Expressway in India - first responders have found 16 bodies so far but fear more people are 'trapped' in the debris

A crane has collapsed killing 16 people and injuring five others - and more people are feared to be trapped in the debris.

The horrifying accident occurred around midnight last night (Monday, July 31) while the Samruddhi Expressway was being built in Maharashtra's Thane district, India.

The huge 701km bridge connects Mumbai and Nagpur. It was in its third stage of construction when the mobile gantry crane tragically collapsed onto it.

Police, firefighters and officers from India's National Disaster Response Force were all called to the scene late last night.

Tragically, the bodies of at least 16 people have been recovered so far. The death toll is likely to rise as authorities say they believe more people are "trapped" under the collapsed crane.

Local reports suggest around 17 people could still be missing. Officials have said they suspect six more people are underneath the rubble.

"There's a chance that more persons are trapped beneath the debris," Dadaji Bhuse, Minister of Public Works, said.

Those found seriously injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.

Rescue efforts are still ongoing.

This comes after daredevil photographer Remi Lucidi plunged to his death from a 721ft skyscraper.

The 30-year-old, known as Remi Enigma on social media, made a name for himself by scaling various tall buildings around the world.

The Frenchman reached the 68th floor of Tregunter Tower in Hong Kong before his fatal fall last Thursday (July 27).

He was spotted by a maid knocking on the windows of the penthouse, attempting to get help. According to South China Morning Post, sources said he got trapped outside.
