Infamous Premier League flop pumps iron in pre season – but fans spot odd training aid

Fitness issues caused Kostas Mitroglou's spell at Fulham to be a disaster - so an unusual snap of him working out in pre-season training may come as no surprise to their fans

Infamous Premier League flop Kostas Mitroglou was spotted with an unorthodox training aid as he hit the gym in pre-season.

Mitroglou made just three appearances in the English top flight for Fulham after they'd splashed £12million to sign him from Olympiacos in January 2014.

Despite the Cottagers slipping to relegation, the Greek international - who racked up 65 caps for his country - couldn't make it into Felix Magath's side.

He faced repeated criticism for his lack of fitness, which Magath felt wasn't up to scratch. And nine years on the reason for that might have been revealed.

Mitroglou has been pictured pumping the iron with some bicep curls. While that's standard procedure for a footballer, doing it with a cigarrete behind your ear isn't.

It was picked up on by fans on social media, with one tweeting: "Mitroglou been training with a cigarette on his ear lmaooooo." A second echoed: "The cigarette on the ear hahaha."

"With the cigarette in his ear, he maintains his muscles but not his lungs," commented a third, while a fourth joked: "If you're Greek, French or Italian you get a pass."

A fifth argued: "He looks like Conor McGregor." And a sixth asked: "This guy still play?"

Mitroglou, who's now aged 35, finished his professional career with a spell at Aris in his homeland in the 2021/22 season. However, he's since carried on playing in the German non-league.

He spent the second half of last season at SpVgg Rheurdt-Schaephuysen, a ninth-tier club managed by his friend and former team-mate Robert Kruppa. But he's moved to sixth-tier side Scherpenberg ahead of next season after scoring twice in seven games.
