Jadon Sancho must eat humble pie and apologise – or his Man Utd career will be over

Jadon Sancho will only prove the doubters right if he refuses to apologise to Erik ten Hag, and like it or not, the Manchester United outcast must swallow his pride to resurrect his career

Jadon Sancho is living proof of the old adage that 'sorry' can sometimes be the hardest word.

But unless Sancho can swallow his pride and summon up the strength to apologise to Erik ten Hag, his Manchester United career will be over. It might be already, to be honest.

No-one is winning from the stubborn stand-off between Sancho and Ten Hag. Not both individuals, not the club and certainly not supporters.

To recap. Ten Hag dropped Sancho from his squad, and when asked the reason why he revealed the winger had not been training properly. Sancho took to social media to deny this was the case, and accused the Dutchman of lying.

Sancho hasn't been seen since, has been made to train alone at Carrington and will not be taken back into the United squad until he shows the levels of contrition Ten Hag demands. To make matters worse for Sancho, Ten Hag has the support of the rest of his squad, leaving the winger ostracised and alone.

Just who is advising Sancho to behave like this? His value and reputation are both plummeting faster than Chelsea's drop down the Premier League table. The most ironic aspect of the whole episode is that Ten Hag needs him, due to the fact Mason Greenwood has gone elsewhere and Antony is on a leave of absence.

Senior figures have met to discuss the Sancho conundrum - and would be prepared to let him leave in the next transfer window. But the damage done between now and then could turn out to be huge.

Sancho has form. Pep Guardiola decided to let him leave Manchester City when Sancho refused to go on a pre-season tour of the United States, while the 23-year-old earned a reputation for tardiness during his time at Borussia Dortmund.

We've seen some high profile sportsmen apologise in the past. Think Tiger Woods at Augusta when his womanising became public, or 'Sandpapergate' duo Steve Smith and David Warner after being caught cheating in South Africa.

All three of these were forced to dine out on huge portions of humble pie. And Sancho needs to do the same, otherwise he will end up a 'has been' before he's even achieved something in the game.
