From why did Jay Slater venture into the steep ravine to did he steal a £12K Rolex, the case of the missing teen on Tenerife is riddled with mysteries and unanswered questions

The case of Jay Slater's whereabouts has come to a tragic close. Yet many questions remain about the missing teen, his final hours, and the case itself.

The 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from Lancashire went to Tenerife with two pals, Lucy Law and Brad Hargreaves for the New Generation Rave festival. It was his first mate’s trip away.

After being separated from his friends, he went back to the remote Airbnb of two Brits he met at the rave on Sunday, June 16 in the mountainous village of Masca.

The next day, it’s thought he tried to catch a bus but set off on the 11-hour walk back to his accommodation, when it appears he fell down a steep ravine, his tumble, likely killing him instantly.

In a case riddled with mysteries, both big and small, we take a look at the biggest five questions surrounding Jay Slater’s disappearance and death.

Did Jay steal a Rolex?

As the search for Jay began and theories started to emerged over why he might choose to lay low, the teen was linked to a luxury watch theft shortly before he disappeared.

Spanish police were told to look into an alleged theft of a £12,000 Rolex, after a brawl broke out over the missing watch at the Papagayo Beach Club where Jay was partying in the early hours of June 17.

It was then revealed by former British police detective Mark Williams-Thomas, who liaised with Jay's family during the search, that Jay had "posted a Snapchat saying that he'd taken a £12,000 Rolex from a person”.

However, the Spanish police never revealed if they were looking into the theft, nor if the watch was found among Jay's possessions with the recovered body.

Was Jay connected to a criminal network?

While a potential theft of a watch could be passed off as opportunistic, questions remain over whether or not the apprentice bricklayer was potentially involved in more sinister activities.

After losing his friends at the rave, Jay had gone back to the Airbnb of two Brits, to "have a few beers". It transpired that one of these guys was Ayub Qassim, a convicted drug dealer.

Qassim was busted for running a heroin and crack cocaine operation in Cardiff in 2014 and served nine years. While the pair could have met by chance at the rave, the ex-crim revealed he knew Jay.

As Qassim hit back at rumours he was somehow involved with Jay's disappearance, he said that he knew Jay “through friends”, adding: “I’m not going to bring someone back to mine if I don't know them.”

Following this, Williams-Thomas came out to discredit suggestions of foul play, the TV detective revealed investigations had taken a sinister turn.

He said: "We've still not found evidence of a third party criminal involvement in Jay's disappearance, although we have opened up links with a criminal underworld drugs associated crime."

What these links are, and how they relate to Jay, remain unclear.

Why did he walk to the ravine?

Jay’s body was found in an ‘inaccessible” area in Tenerife’s rugged mountainside, near where his phone last pinged. Video footage released by police also showed experts scouring through dense terrain while picking their way through thick undergrowth.

The area is so treacherous, even locals don’t venture there, with one resident saying it is a "mystery" why he was there.

Helena Gomes 35, said: “You see how bad it is, we don’t even walk there, so if someone gets into trouble it is going to be hard for anyone to find the body.

“No one is surprised it took so long, why he was there is a mystery, he should never have been going that way, maybe he saw the ocean and thought it was the best way."

Jay could have found his way to the ravine, in part because he was in a hurry to leave the Airbnb. During one of his updates, Williams-Thomas said that "Jay took certain actions while at the rental" because he was "clearly worried about his own safety".

He added that he had information that may cast light on why Jay may have left the holiday rental in a hurry, "even though his phone was about to go flat".

What happens to the GoFundMe cash?

Shortly after Jay disappeared, his close pal Lucy Law set up a GoFundMe page to help the family with their search. The £30K target was soon smashed, as donations from well-wishers flooded in.

People continued to donate even after human remains were found, and then confirmed as Jay's. Currently, the page has fundraised almost £60k.

The funds were being used to help Jay's family cover their expenses and continue searching for the teenagers, after Spanish authorities 'called off' their search 12 days in. Shortly after it was reported a specialists team from Netherlands were being flown into the island, along with sniffer dogs, Jay's body was found.

It's understood insurance should cover the repatriation of Jay's body back to the UK, however if not, some of this money could go to bringing the Lancashire lad back home and cover his funeral costs.

What now?

It was initially thought the Canary Islands would hold onto Jay's body for several weeks as authorities finished their investigations and conclusions.

However, now that the body has been confirmed as Jay's, his family are preparing to bring his body back to the UK.

Matt Searle, boss of LBT Global, the British overseas persons charity confirmed mum Debbie, dad Warren and brother Zac, will make the sad return journey home with Jay's body. He added that Debbie and Warren have begun making funeral arrangements, and that Jay's mum is keeping herself busy so she doesn't fall apart.

Speaking to the BBC, Searle said: “Debbie has told me if she is not doing something she will just fall apart.”
