Liverpool are yet to make a signing under Arne Slot after Martin Zubimendi rejected a move to Anfield and Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all out of contract next year

Liverpool were snubbed by Spanish star Martin Zubimendi after he decided to remain with Real Sociedad - leaving fans fearing a disastrous summer at Anfield.

The Reds won't be landing the midfielder despite being given assurances that he would leave the La Liga side. Zubimendi, 25, decided to reverse his decision and stay with the club he has been with since he was 12 - rejecting the chance to join new manager Arne Slot at Anfield.

New sporting director Richard Hughes is yet to make a single signing in the post-Jurgen Klopp era - making Liverpool the only club in the Premier League not to recruit any new players this summer. With less than three weeks left before the August 30 transfer deadline, the Liverpool Echo report the Reds are "unlikely" to pursue another defensive midfielder.

Three key players including star forward Mohamed Salah, captain Virgil van Dijk, and vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold are also all out of contract at the end of the forthcoming season. And with the club yet to agree new deals with their biggest assets - and Van Dijk calling for new signings - fans have vented their fury online.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, one Liverpool fan raged: "What a shambles of a transfer window. Season starts in 5 days. No new signings. No new contracts for our 3 best players. And not linked to a single player other than the player who spent 2 weeks rejecting us."

Another Reds supporter replied: "So far 4 players lighter. Matip. Thiago. Adrian. Carvalho. Strange. £35m up and wages massively reduced. No excuse not to go big." A third said: "Can’t help but think this played a big part in Klopp leaving. Told he’ll have f*** all money in the summer to spend, leaving us with little chance of competing with City and Arsenal."

A fourth fan commented: "Typical #FSG no ambition. Richard Hughes is absolutely useless. #FSGOUTNOW now Klopp has gone, we no longer have any pull." And a fifth moaned: "Pressure is on for the new structure now. Reduced a 3 month window to a 3 week window in the name of assessing the squad, now missed out on our top target, no key contract renewals done, and got the captain saying he thinks we need strengthening."

Zubimendi is said to have communicated his decision to Liverpool on Monday evening, reversing his initial desire to make a move to Anfield. Liverpool had been under the impression he was keen to leave Sociedad and prepared to join a new club, which sparked their interest in the Euro 2024 winner.

However, under pressure from his childhood club, the midfielder decided to stay put. Real Sociedad launched a charm offensive to convince Zubimendi not to join Liverpool, revealing earlier on Monday that they would have required the player to personally pay his own £52million buy-out clause to facilitate the move.

Liverpool had seen Zubimendi as a solution to their long struggle to recruit a new number six, with the Spaniard fitting the desired profile. It marks another significant setback in Liverpool's quest for a defensive midfielder, following their unsuccessful bid for Aurelien Tchouameni who joined Real Madrid two years ago, and the failure to sign either of Moises Caicedo or Romeo Lavia, who chose to join Chelsea instead last summer.

Liverpool's squad has seen a significant reduction since last season ended, with Monday's confirmation of Fabio Carvalho's £27.5million sale to Brentford. Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip and Adrian left on free transfers over the summer, while Calvin Ramsay, Luke Chambers, Lewis Koumas and Fabian Mrozek have all been loaned out.

It now seems almost certain Liverpool will kick off their campaign against newly-promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday without any new faces. The club now face a race against time to strengthen their squad before the transfer deadline and risk Slot having to utilise his only recognised defensive midfielder, the veteran Japanese midfielder Wataru Endo in the position, turn to a youngster like Stefan Bajcetic, or ask more attacking players such as Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai or Curtis Jones to fill the void.
