A man has been stabbed near the world famous British Museum on Great Russell Street in London on Tuesday morning, leading to an arrest of the suspect and an evacuation of visitors

A man queueing for the British Museum was left "dripping blood everywhere" after being stabbed in the arm.

The 'middle-aged' victim was taken from the bustling tourist-lined street to hospital soon after the attack at around 10am on Tuesday.

According to reports, the incident at the grand building on Great Russell Street is now under control following the arrest of a man on suspicion of causing grievous body harm, the Metropolitan Police said.

A Twitter user claims to have been kicked out of the museum as a result of the investigation, despite the man being stabbed outside the museum's gates.

Hank Floyd wrote: "Within ten minutes of entering, they are kicking us out. the @britishmuseum is closing due to police alert?? A man with a knife in the queue."

Another Twitter user, Keira Renee claims to have been queuing up for the museum only to be told it has now closed for the day.

They said: "Was just waiting in line to enter.. Being told by police that it’s a large crime scene and that the museum will be closed until tomorrow."

Just last week, footage was shared on social media of a huge queue for the British Museum which stretched down Great Russell Street beyond the towering black fence.

Would-be museum visitor, Keira told The Telegraph: “I was at the scene, I heard that someone was stabbed and the ambulance was parked inside near the grass area and then rushed down the street, right by me, with a police following behind.

"A cop told me the museum is completely closed until tomorrow.”

Camden Police tweeted: "A man has been arrested on suspicion of GBH following an isolated incident at the junction of Russell Street /Museum St approx 10am - a man was taken to hospital with a stab wound. No outstanding risk to the public."

Police said the incident was not terror related and there was “no outstanding risk to the public”.

The manager of a nearby souvenir shop, who wished to remain anonymous, said he saw a middle-aged man stabbed while he waited in the queue for the museum on Great Russell Street not far from the Museum Tavern pub.

He attempted to escape and was “dripping blood everywhere”, the witness claimed.

The male attacker was arrested by police a short distance away on Coptic Street, he said.

A local businesswoman heard the victim “screaming” and saw a trail of blood along the street in the aftermath of the attack.

A police tent was erected on the pavement on the museum side of Great Russell Street, just metres from the entrance.

London Ambulance Service said its medics treated the man at the scene for his arm injury “before taking him to a major trauma centre as a priority”.

A British Museum spokesperson told the Daily Star: “The Museum was closed this morning due to an incident following a member of the public being attacked nearby.

“The Museum’s security team supported at the scene until the emergency services arrived. Visitors were evacuated from the Museum as a precaution and we wish the victim a full and swift recovery.”

The British Museum will raise its security searches of visitors as a precaution in response to the stabbing.
