Man Utd’s shock during Jordan Pickford negotiations forced them to go for Andre Onana
EXCLUSIVE: Everton have held firm over Jordan Pickford, which led Manchester United to focus their efforts on signing Andre Onana from Inter Milan as a replacement for David de Gea
Everton slapped a shocking £70million price-tag on Jordan Pickford to kill Manchester United hopes of landing their England keeper.
Reds boss Erik ten Hag had identified Pickford as his preferred choice to replace the now departed David de Gea between the Old Trafford posts.
But the surprisingly large fee required to get him out of Goodison Park this summer forced him to look elsewhere - and target Inter Milan’s Andre Onana instead.
United reckoned they would be able to secure Pickford, 29, at a bargain £45m because of the Toffees well-documented money issues.
The Merseysiders have been on the Premier League financial watchlist for more than a year after blowing vast sums on expensive misfits pre-Covid.
Over the last three years, their combined financial losses have topped £305m and they have been referred to an independent commission for an alleged breach of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
However, those problems have not led to the predicted fire-sale of their major assets in the current window. Indeed, it has proved the complete reverse regarding Pickford.
Despite needing to raise funds to invest into a squad that has narrowly avoided relegation two years on the bounce, Toffees boss Sean Dyche knows that to find a keeper as consistently good as the ex-Sunderland man would require spending big.
Which makes the idea of selling him no for anything less than £70m pointless.
And the fact the Three Lions star is not desperate to get away - he signed a new three-year deal only last April - did nothing to help United’s cause.
The Reds have even struggled to meet the £47m Inter want for one-time Ajax ace Onana - underlining why coughing up nearly twice that for Pickford was way beyond their budget.
That is a worrying development for frustrated United fans as fears the club will not be sold before the start of next season by the ever-unpopular Glazer family grow.
While that limbo off the pitch persists, Ten Hag’s transfer ambitions are being severely hampered.
The Dutchman has other areas in the side which he needs to reinforce - and that means he cannot afford to spend over the odds on a keeper.
They do remain confident of signing Cameroon international Onana, 27, who is brilliant with his feet - like Pickford - and fits Ten Hag’s passing-from-the-back philosophy perfectly.
Meanwhile, former-United number one De Gea’s proposed free move to Saudi outfit Al Nassr is on hold after they were barred from the transfer market over outstanding payments from previous deals.
The Spaniard, who refused to take a pay massive cut to his £375,000-a week contract in order to stay at Old Trafford, Is set to pocket almost double that in the Saudi Pro League.
