Manchester United stunned Arsenal at the Emirates as Michael Carrick's side won 3-2 thanks to wondergoals from Patrick Dorgu and Matheus Cunha

Manchester United stunned Arsenal as wondergoals from Patrick Dorgu and Matheus Cunha completed an incredible turnaround at the Emirates.

Hot off the back of a brilliant 2-0 win over Manchester City in Michael Carrick's first game, United headed to Arsenal with little pressure on their shoulders. All of the expectation was on the hosts to take back their seven point lead at the top of the table after Manchester City and Aston Villa secured victories. And it showed.

The hosts took the lead through a Lisandro Martinez own goal but failed to kick on. Arteta has been criticised for putting the handbrake on his Arsenal team to see through narrow leads and draws, and it backfired on the Spaniard again. Goals either side of half-time from Bryan Mbeumo and a wonderstrike from Patrick Dorgu saw United turn the game on its head.

But Arteta's set-piece saving grace appeared to come to the rescue again when Mikel Merino bundled the ball over the line from a corner. However, Matheus Cunha whipped a rocket of an effort into the bottom corner from 25 yards to give United back the lead with three minutes to go.

Both managers’ team selections caught the eye with the visitors remaining unchanged from the brilliant Manchester derby victory last Saturday. Carrick even kept faith with Diogo Dalot at right-back despite his worrying form and Noussair Mazraoui available for the first time in eight games since the Moroccan returned from AFCON.

Meanwhile Arteta finally caved and dropped Viktor Gyokeres. The Swede has been clinging onto his starting role all season and Gabriel Jesus eventually did enough to convince his manager of his fitness and ability to start over Gyokeres after his brace at Inter Milan in the Champions League.

And it was Jesus’ busyness in the opening exchanges that proved to be one of the issues that United’s backline had to handle as Arsenal pressed high without the ball and played at a good tempo on it.

United managed to weather the storm and started to get into their stride after 20 minutes, but the visitors felt a hammer blow in the 29th minute when Lisandro Martinez’s own goal gave Arsenal the lead at a time when the game was drifting.

But Arsenal didn’t kick on. The handbrake was firmly on again from Arteta and the hosts paid the price when Martin Zubimendi’s dreadful back pass played in Bryan Mbeumo to slot past David Raya just eight minutes later.

United handled their reaction to scoring much more commandingly than Arsenal did as Carrick’s side looked relaxed until the break and emerged confident and on the front foot in the second half.

And the visitors got their reward for their efforts in stunning fashion as Patrick Dorgu crashed a volley off the underside of the bar and into the roof of the net in the 50th minute. An incredible strike from a player who followed up his goal against City in style.

Dorgu was signed by Ruben Amorim as a specialist left-wing back in his system, but under Carrick, the 21-year-old started his second game in a row on the left-wing.

The Dane’s pace, directness in possession and switch into a more attacking role has seen some fans label him ‘Dorgu Bale’ in a nod to Gareth Bale’s incredible emergence at Tottenham after starting as an underwhelming left-back.

It’s very doubtful that Dorgu’s career will reach the heights of Bale, but it appears he will continue to keep £62million summer signing Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount out of the team in the weeks to come.

Dorgu also helped out Luke Shaw defensively to frustrate Bukayo Saka in the same fashion that Amad Diallo doubled up with Dalot on the right-hand side. However, there will be concerns about Dorgu's fitness after he was replaced by Benjamin Sesko having picked up a hamstring problem.

The nerves inside the Emirates from the home fans soon turned to frustration as Arsenal failed to wrestle back control of the game. Every time an Arsenal player took too long on the ball, every throw-in that wasn't released immediately was met by groans of discontent.

Arsenal failed to create an opening until Saka drove a low shot at the near post, forcing Senne Lammens into a sharp save at his near post. And the resulting corner forced another set-piece goal from the hosts as Mikel Merino bundled one over the line from point-blank range.

However, the game had another twist when Cunha's rocket gave United the lead again in the 87th minute in what proved to be the winning goal.

It leaves the Gunners with just a four-point lead over Manchester City in the race for the title, as Arsenal fans online blasted the "shocking" performance of their manager and players in such a crucial clash.
