Man Utd bosses concerned about Marcus Rashford's off-field activities after dip in form
EXCLUSIVE: Marcus Rashford is out of contract in the summer of 2023 and has struggled for form at Man Utd this season - with only two Premier League goals, the most recent coming in October
Manchester United bosses have raised concerns about Marcus Rashford's off-field commitments following his alarming dip in form.
But this will not stop United from opening talks with Rashford in June about a new and improved contract at Old Trafford.
Rashford, 24, has come under fire following a run of woeful performances that have seen him score just three goals this season and struggle to hold down a regular place in the team.
And it can be revealed that senior club figures spoke to Rashford earlier this season about fears that the England star's personal crusades away from football were having a detrimental effect on his game.
United also believe Rashford's decision to sign-up with 'Roc Nation' - one of the world's pre-eminent entertainment companies - proved to be ill-judged. He ended his association with them in July after just 12 months on their books.
Rashford, who was awarded an MBE in October, has become one of the leading campaigners against racism, homelessness and child hunger in the United Kingdom and earned widespread praise in 2021 for using his platform to be a political activist and philanthropist to drive social change.
He won the love of the nation during the pandemic after forcing Boris Johnson into an embarrassing U-turn when the Prime Minister agreed to extend free school meals for children.
But while Rashford has become an iconic figure off the pitch his performances on it raised alarm bells at Old Trafford, which resulted in the club holding talks with the forward about finding a balance between the two.
It is understood Rashford assured United he remained fully committed to the club, but that he was also determined to press on with his work for charities in order to help people in need.
United believe Rashford can still go on to become a playing icon at Old Trafford and have made securing his future on a long-term contract one of their priorities this summer.
Rashford, whose current deal keeps him at United until June 2023, has been accused by critics in recent weeks of sulking and looking disillusioned with life in Manchester.
But Rashford, who has formed a strong relationship with interim boss Ralf Rangnick, hit back to insist his loyalty should never be questioned.
Rashford said: "I'm not sulking, I'm not unhappy. Am I disappointed in some of my recent performances? Of course I am. I'm my own biggest critic.
'It's been a tough start but I'm determined to prove my worth. My dedication and my desire to be here should never be in question. I love this club."
