Man Utd 'one step away from Viktor Gyokeres transfer' as Arsenal and Liverpool eye target
Sporting Lisbon are preparing for life without Viktor Gyokeres amid interest from Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool, with a transfer for the Swedish goal machine drawing closer
Sporting Lisbon are reportedly bracing themselves for the departure of Viktor Gyokeres, with Almeria's Luis Javier Suarez being considered as a potential successor.
Gyokeres, who is on Manchester United's wish list, scored more than 50 goals last season, leading his team to victory and sparking interest from several clubs for a high-profile summer transfer. Arsenal are poised to compete with United for his signature, having been strongly linked with a move for him.
And it's even been suggested that Premier League champions Liverpool could enter the fray and target the 27-year-old as a successor for the outgoing Darwin Nunez. Despite Sporting's attempts to keep their star player, Gyokeres has expressed his intention to leave.
European reports [via the Mirror] suggest Suarez is now the prime candidate to replace Gyokeres in the attacking line-up for the 2025-26 season. Sporting's move to secure a replacement suggests that Gyokeres could indeed be set to depart - although he still needs to decide which club to sign for before the new season kicks off.
Sporting have a well-established reputation for developing talent, with many of their signings later moving on for significant profits. Suarez, a Colombian international, currently competes in Spain's second division and netted 31 goals last season.
Reports suggest Sporting were willing to let Gyokeres leave for around £65million, which is less than his release clause. However, disagreements between the player and club management over the asking price have complicated his exit, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Sporting club president Frederico Varandas has shut down talk of Viktor Gyokeres leaving for a reduced price tag, stating: "I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for 60m euros plus 10m euros because I never promised that. To this day Sporting has not had an offer for Gyokeres - neither today nor last season."
Gyokeres' impressive displays at Coventry caught the eye of Ruben Amorim, who snapped him up for Sporting and went on to achieve major success with the Swede on board.
Now, United are interested in reuniting the pair, with Amorim keen to bolster his squad's attacking options.
