Met Office reveals exactly how hot 'unseasonal' October scorcher will be this weekend
Met Office meteorologists expect temperatures in the UK to rise well above the average for the time of year this weekend, as hot weather from the continent is heading our way
The Met Office says "unseasonable October warmth" is coming to the UK this weekend. The national weather agency has also revealed exactly how high the mercury will climb.
It comes following what was officially the hottest September on record - both in the UK and worldwide.
Temperatures today (Thursday, October 5) won't be much to write home about with peaks of 18C to 19C expected the East Anglia, the south-east and southern-central regions this afternoon. The rest of the country is expected to hover around 16C to 18C.
However from Friday (October 6) air moving in from the continent will start to warm things up. Londoners can expect 22C, with the rest of England and Wales at 20C or 21C.
The hot spell will peak on Saturday (October 7) and Sunday (October 8), with the Met Office saying temperatures in some parts of the country could hit 27C - well above the average for October.
Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: "The jet stream is going to push its way northwards ahead of the weekend, which will allow for some very warm air to come in from the south.
"As we go into the weekend frontal systems will remain trailing across Scotland as this warm air moves into the south. For many further south it will be a fine, dry day on Saturday with temperatures getting to highs of around 25C, which is unusually warm for the time of year.
"By Sunday, it’ll be a more widely dry and sunny day for many. Highs or around 26C or even 27C in isolated spots is possible."
The Met Office says the "dry and warm spell" will "likely" continue into the start of next week too, apart from in the far north where prolonged spells of cloud and rain can be expected. From the middle of next week, "increasingly unsettled and cooler" conditions are expected.
Netweather forecaster Nick Finnis has predicted similar temperatures for this weekend. He writes: "October continues the warmer than average trend that September finished with. This coming weekend could see temperatures reach 24-26C across south-east England and East Anglia and generally reaching the low 20Cs across large parts of England and east Wales too."
