The Met Office has warned that most of the UK will be battered by bad weather, with thunderstorms and high-speed winds battering our buildings throughout the night

Brits are set to be battered by thunderstorms and high winds before El Nino brings sweltering temperatures to the UK, as the Met Office issues seven yellow weather warnings.

Huge swathes of the UK are set to be hit with severe weather across the whole day, the Met Office reports.

The warning comes as Europe suffers a major heatwave, with the mercury on the continent hitting highs of 48C.

It also comes as El Nino, a global weather phenomenon that comes every three to seven years when the Pacific Ocean heats up and raises global temperatures, is set to wreak havoc on the UK in the coming months.

One expert said that the phenomenon will lay the perfect foundation for "chaotic occurrences" that could result in 21C heat in February, severe thunderstorms, four week-long blizzards, or even tornadoes, as well as more record breaking temperatures.

Nearly all of the south of England and the south of Wales are set to be battered by high speed winds until at least midnight tonight (July 15).

People living in all towns south of Gloucester, Oxford, Leicester and Lincoln have been told to batten down the hatches and prepare for a full day of strong winds.

The Met has warned that short term loss of power and other services is possible, while public transport may also be delayed because of the gusts.

Meanwhile, all of Scotland and parts of the north of England are set to be battered by thunderstorms, with the Met Office warning that flooding could occur in towns and cities north of Lancaster until at least 11pm.

The whole of Northern Ireland has also been told to prepare for heavy rains, with the weather prediction starkly warning that people in the area should expect floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds to cause damage until 8pm tonight.

Thankfully, the Met Office has not yet issued weather warnings for the rest of this week
