Builders were left shocked and called police who rushed to the former Simpson pub on Romford Road in Forest Gate, east London shortly after 3pm on Friday. An investigation is now underway

Construction workers have found a "badly decomposed" body at a derelict pub beside an east London police station.

Tests will now be carried out and a post mortem will be held on Tuesday, to establish further information, police said.

Builders were left shocked and called police who rushed to the former Simpson pub on Romford Road in Forest Gate shortly after 3pm on Friday.

The mystery body is believed to have decayed significantly, according to Mail Online.

Photos from the scene of the grisly discovery show the premises covered in scaffolding, with forensics experts and police in attendance.

The pub was originally known as The Freemasons Arms before reopening as Simpsons from the 1980s until the early 2000s, The Sun reported.

It was most recently a nightclub named La Luna before it shut down.

A Met Police spokesman said: "Police were called just after 1500hrs on Friday, 15 October, to the former Simpson pub on Romford Road, Forest Gate.

"The premises had been derelict for many years. A body was discovered during building work on the site.

"Tests will now be carried out and a post mortem will be held on Tuesday, 19 October to establish further information."

The body might have been found sooner but three attempts have been made to renovate the site in recent years, but the bids were refused, the Newham Recorder reported/

A last bid was refused in 2018 by Newham Council, in part due to a failure to provide evidence of a demand for its use.
