Newcastle United look set to bring Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier back to the Premier League after making the defender their number one target for the January transfer window

Kieran Trippier is edging closer to a move back to the Premier League with Newcastle United now firm favourites to sign the defender.

The England international has emerged as one of the club's top priorities for the January transfer window and Toon boss Eddie Howe is confident he'll be able to land his man.

The 31-year-old has been a mainstay in Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid side since joining in 2019, but with his contract up in June, the Spanish side are open to cashing in while they can.

Although a one-year extension will be triggered if he starts 20 games during the season, Trippier has been angling for a move back to England for some time, with a move to Manchester United collapsing over the summer.

Talks with Newcastle have been developing since November despite the fact Trippier is sidelined until January with a shoulder injury.

According to talkSPORT, the Magpies are prepared to part with £25million to land the player and will make him their highest-paid squad member as their new mega-rich owners prepare to ****** the cash in January.

Newcastle are currently 19th in the Premier League with just one win from their opening 16 matches, and are staring relegation in the face.

Howe is desperate to add Trippier to the squad as he believes the defender can lead by example to pull the team out of the mess it's in.

Newcastle are expected to spend big next month in a bid preserve their top-flight status, with Burnley defender James Tarkowski and United outcast Jessie Lingard also high on the club's shopping list.
