A 31-year-old man has been arrested after three people were killed during several connected incidents in Nottingham where two tragic fatalities are understood to have been students

The city of Nottingham was brought to a standstill today (June 13) after a man went on a rampage in a van, killing three.

Two victims are understood to have lived in the same halls of residence and had been on the way home from a night out when they were killed on Ilkeston Road.

Another three are currently in hospital, and a 31-year-old man was arrested.

No motive or reason for the horrific attacks has been released by police yet, with many eyewitness statements giving more detail than official commentary, as it stands - although police did confirm that they were keeping an "open mind" about the reasons.

However, details of why it happened remain unclear.
How it unfolded

Police officers were called to Ilkeston Road in Nottingham at around 4am, where they found two people dead in the street.

Another man was also found dead in nearby Magdala Road.

Locals reported hearing police cars in the area at around 5am and within minutes, the city centre was shut down.

Milton Street, Ilkeston Road, Magdala Road, Maples Street, Woodborough Road from junction of Magdala Road into the city, and Maid Marian Way junction of Parliament Street were all closed.

Local transport was stopped, and is not expected to return to operations at all today.

Armed police could be seen standing outside a property on Ilkeston Road.

One officer was carrying a large notepad with the words “major incident” on the front.

The property in question has a “sold” estate agent sign outside.

Reporters were able to see the terraced house after the latest temporary cordon was lifted.

Shortly before 3pm, police confirmed that they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the attacks.
What Nottingham Police have said

The official police line is that the investigation is at an “early stage” and they are refusing to speculate on any motives or reasons for the attack.

They did, however, confirm that all three incidents are connected.

The incident is not officially being treated as terror-related.

Chief Constable Kate Meynell called it “horrific and tragic”.

She added: “"We believe these three incidents are all linked and we have a man in custody.

“This investigation is at its early stages and a team of detectives is working to establish exactly what has happened.

“We ask the public to be patient while inquiries continue.

“At this time, a number of roads in the city will remain closed as this investigation progresses.”

A later statement added that the police were keeping an "open mind" about the reasons behind the attack.

A spokesman said: "We are keeping an open mind as we investigate the circumstances surrounding these incidents and are working alongside Counter Terrorism Policing to establish the facts – as we would normally do in these types of circumstances."
What the Daily Star found at the scene

Daily Star news editor Abigail Hunt is currently on the scene (12.10pm):

The city is still on lockdown with cordons shutting down most of the centre and a very heavy police presence still in place after a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident.

"A helicopter is also circling the city, although panic among members of the public seems to have calmed down.

"Police on scene are not commenting any further on the incident, but there looks to be around at least 40 policemen keeping a presence around the city's many cordons.

"Two people were found killed on Ilkeston Road after 4am this morning while a third man was found dead on Magdala Road nearby.

"Officers were also called to Milton Street in the city after a van attempted to run down three pedestrians in what police believe is a connected incident. Those injured are being treated in hospital."
Eyewitness heard 'blood-curdling screams'

With events of this nature, it is hard for locals not to spot things and then talk about them.

One of those was an unnamed man who claims he heard “blood-curdling screams”.

He said that he also saw a young man and woman being stabbed on Ilkeston Road, as well as a “black guy dressed all in black with a hood and rucksack grappling with some people”.

“She was screaming ‘Help!’,” he recalled.

“I just wish I’d shouted something out of the window to unnerve the assailant.

“I saw him stab the lad first and then the woman.

“It was repeated stabbing – four or five times.

“The lad collapsed in the middle of the road – the girl stumbled towards a house and didn’t move. “The next minute she had disappeared down the side of a house, and that’s where they found her.”

He added that the alleged attacker then just “walked off up Ilkeston Road towards town” and described the man's behaviour as being “as calm as anything”.

Video footage circulating online, and shown by Sky News, shows three police officers appearing to arrest the driver of the van, who is lying down on the floor.

Mohammed Qasim and Nisar Ahmed, who works at Xclusive Hair Studio next door to a property on Ilkeston Road where uniformed officers are stood outside, said the property had been raided last year.

Mr Qasim said they were in the shop when the property was raided.

“The for sale sign has been up for about two-three months. - we haven’t seen anyone since,” he said.

"Others have claimed that police were seen "taking from a rucksack a rather large knife".
Reaction from politicians and other officials

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took to Twitter to make his official comments on the incident.

He thanked the emergency services for their response to the “shocking incident” in Nottingham, adding: “My thoughts are with those injured, and the family and loved ones of those who have lost their lives.”

And Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer began his big interview at London Tech Week by talking about the attacks.

He said: “There has been a serious incident in Nottingham this morning.

“Information is still coming through but it's just been reported that three people have lost their lives.

“I'm sure I speak for everyone in this room in saying that we'd like to just send our thoughts to all those affected and to the emergency services who are responding to this as we speak.”

A spokesman for Nottingham Forest Football Club said: "We are devastated to learn the news of the horrific events that took place in Nottingham this morning.

"The thoughts of everyone at #NFFC are with the friends and families of those who have tragically lost their lives and to everyone affected by this incident."
Statement from the University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham, where two of the victims are understood to have been students, has released a statement following the incident.

The academic institution said: "It is with great sadness that we confirm the sudden and unexpected death of two of our students following a major incident in Nottingham city centre overnight.

"We are shocked and devastated by the news and our thoughts are with those affected, their families and friends.

We know this is likely to cause distress for staff and students in our community. Support is available through our support and wellbeing services for any of our community who may need it."
