Old Trafford future revealed by supercomputer – and leaky roof is tip of the iceberg
Scientists warn of climate change and this summer has already seen a number of sporting events scuppered by rain as AI reimagines what would happen to Old Trafford and its leaky roof
One of the immediate issues that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS had to address at Manchester United was the leaky roof, dubbed ‘the Old Trafford Falls,’ and AI have imagined a future of the stadium in a world affected by climate change.
We’ve already seen sporting actions this summer such as the T20 World Cup and Wimbledon enduring wash out matches and events postponed or affected by the wet summer, not to mention the Olympic open water swimmers at the Paris Olympics in the River Seine.
But what would happen to the grandest club stadium in the UK if wetter winters were to continue? While the roof has been a constant dig thrown at the club in recent months, INEOS brains will have to plan further than just repairs if AI’s prediction is to not be the case.
OLBG have used AI software Midjourney AI and Adobe Firefly to reimagine The Theatre of Dreams. A spokesperson from OLBG explained the concern surrounding sport and the rain disruption that has been seen across the summer as years previously.
“The summers are getting wetter, and in 2024 alone, we’ve seen a lot of rain disruption at major events such as Roland Garros for the French Open tennis, Wimbledon, and the T20 Cricket World Cup, where rain washouts have spoiled play for the likes of England and hosts USA.”
AI’s depiction sees the stands covered in snow where the winter conditions have broken through the botched Old Trafford roof, the pitch has been totally submerged underwater and sections of the roof have collapsed due to the battering winds.
“Factors such as rising tides, wetter winters, desertification, and drought were considered when selecting our seeding list of sports stadia,” the spokesperson added. “At OLBG we recently reimagined Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium as a luxurious 100,000-seater stadium
“This time around, however, our AI image is more stark as it shows how the stadium could look if it were affected by wetter winters caused by climate change. The pitch has completely submerged underwater, and the severe winds have caused parts of the roof to collapse.”
Old Trafford’s future appears to be at a crossroads with redevelopment and regeneration plans for the stadium and surrounding area already under consideration.
The location of a major railway line directly behind the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand is a sticking point in redevelopment plans which could lead Ratcliffe’s ‘Wembley of the North’ dream to enter fruition.
