Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa are reportedly bracing themselves for a hefty fine after allegedly breaching UEFA's spending regulations

Aston Villa are reportedly bracing themselves for a big fine after allegedly breaching UEFA's spending regulations.

The Midlanders have had an impressive first season back in the Champions League, with Unai Emery's squad securing a spot in the knockout stages after finishing eighth in the league stage. However, despite their on-field success, it's been claimed that Villa are set to face significant penalties due to their wage spending. The Deloitte Football Money League indicates that Villa's wage-to-revenue turnover was at 96% last term, a rise from 94% the previous year. The Times reports this exceeds the UEFA squad cost ratio limit of 90%. Consequently, Villa could be hit with a 'several-million pound' fine for this breach.UEFA's limits are expected to decrease over the next season, with the current limit at 80 percent, and it will drop further to 70 percent ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, reports the Mirror.

If Villa are fined, it will mark the second time this season alone that they've had to reach a settlement with the European governing body. They were also ordered to pay a £50,670 (€60,000) fine in September for allegedly submitting their financial information late.Emery has made it clear that when it comes to bringing in new talent, they're being careful not to fall foul of financial regulations. Last month he commented on the situation, saying: "Of course profit and sustainability rules are sometimes stopping us in how we can improve, but the idea is to try to keep moving forward."He shared his belief that securing a spot in European competitions would bolster their chances, adding: "Being in the Champions League gives us a better chance to do that, as does qualifying for the Europa League or the Conference League."

Emery stressed the importance of shrewd management, stating, "We have to be intelligent. We have to use different ways to improve our squad. If we have to sell players, do it, but always with the idea of replacing them with someone who can improve us."He also highlighted the club's progressive stance, adding: "The club is always looking forward and trying to increase our financial capacity."Villa's dedication to financial equilibrium was evident in their manoeuvring during the January transfer window, offloading players for substantial sums. Grabbing the headlines was striker Jhon Duran's departure to Saudi juggernauts Al-Nassr.Clearing out some space on the roster saw Jaden Philogene and Diego Carlos join Ipswich and Fenerbahce, respectively. Villa weren't afraid to splash some cash, however, bringing in ex-Borussia Dortmund sensation Donyell Malen, while Manchester United outcast Marcus Rashford, defender Axel Disasi, and Spanish playmaker Marco Asensio all joined the squad on loan deals.
