Police have allegedly removed three 'drunk' passengers from a Ryanair flight destined for Lanzarote after the pilot was forced to turn the plane around and fly it back to Edinburgh

A Ryanair flight destined for Lanzarote was turned around and flown back to Edinburgh as three 'drunk' passengers allegedly vaped and drank vodka on the flight, causing a disturbance.

It is understood police were forced to board the plane and remove the tourists after flight RK5593 made the emergency detour. The men could be seen identifying their hand luggage before an officer takes it out and removes the men from the plane in a video clip.

The flight was meant to reach the Spanish island just before 7pm local time yesterday (Friday, July 5). However it ended up turning around as it flew over South Ayrshire.

One passenger told local news outlet La Voz de Lanzarote: "We were supposed to leave at 2.15pm but took off an hour and a half late. It was obvious before we left that one of them who was next to me was drunk. He stank of alcohol and was vaping without any qualms."

The passenger added the passengers began shouting things in English and before fishing out a near-empty bottle of vodka. A flight attendant then confiscated the bottle and their e-cigarette.

The plane was kept waiting on the tarmac for around an hour after police removed the men. The flight eventually took off again and landed in Lanzarote around 11.15pm.

Police confirmed two men arrested and charged while a third man who was arrested and later released without charge.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a disturbance on board a flight which had departed from Edinburgh Airport during the afternoon of Friday, 5 July.

“The aircraft returned to Edinburgh and three men, 22, 22 and 21, were arrested. One of the 22-year-olds and the 21-year-old were charged with a number of offences and will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

“The other 22-year-old was released without charge.”

The Daily Star has contacted Ryanair for comment.
