Secrets of prison officer sex as glam guard is jailed over 'four-minute prayer room romp'

Secret sex and relationships between prisoners and guards are incredibly prevalent and a criminologist has shared some answers on why these inappropriate pairings are not always driven by physical attraction

A prison officer who has been jailed for three and a half years after having sex with two inmates and plotting to smuggle drug-soaked envelopes into jail is the latest in a long line of prisoners and guards who have risked it all for a jail fling.

Isabelle Dale, 23, had sex with Shahid Sharif, 33, who was three years into a 12-year sentence, in the prayer room at HMP Coldingley in Surrey, while other inmates acted as lookouts in a romp that lasted just four minutes.

Dale was also linked with Connor Money – who had been jailed for nine years in 2020 for killing his best friend in a car crash during a police chase – and was “swearing [both of] them undying love”, Judge Christopher Hehir said.

Dale even got engaged to Sharif and had his nickname ‘Sneaks’ tattooed on the back of her neck as well as a framed picture of them together over her bed.

She also plotted with him and his associate, Lilea Sallis, to smuggle a synthetic cannabinoid, commonly known as spice, into HMP Swaleside on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent.

But Dale's story is just one of many tales up and down the country of officers and inmates facing jail because of their inappropriate relationships and criminologist and psychologist Alex Iszatt has revealed these inappropriate relationships are not always driven by sexual attraction.

Speaking to the Mirror, Alex said: “When women work in male-dominated prisons, they can become rare, sexualised objects of attention. This dynamic has been portrayed in porn and occasionally, the boundaries between fantasy and reality can blur.

"Prisons can be isolating environments for both officers and inmates, leading them to turn to each other for emotional support, developing inappropriate attachments. If officers aren't trained to set boundaries, and supervisors fail to manage effectively, situations can quickly get out of hand – especially if the individual lacks emotional support outside of work."

One particularly depraved sexual relationship was revealed in October 2024 when former prison instructor Hayley Jones, 33, pleaded guilty to having an "inappropriate relationship" with convicted murderer Jordan McSweeney at HMP Belmarsh.

McSweeney is currently serving a minimum term of 33 years for the brutal murder and sexual assault of Zara Aleena, a 35-year-old law graduate, in June 2022.

Speaking about the case, Alex explained that "emotional attachment, vulnerability, dependency, power dynamics, trauma bonding, and grooming" are all factors that contribute. She added: "In the case of Jones and McSweeney, she wasn't a typical officer – she was a prison teacher, which adds another layer to the power dynamics."

Earlier in 2024, former HMP Wandsworth officer Linda De Sousa Abreu, 30, admitted to misconduct in a public office after a video of her having sex with an inmate in a cell went viral on social media. This followed the jailing of three female guards for engaging in forbidden relationships with inmates at HMP Berwyn in Wrexham.

Ayshea Gunn, 27, made over 1,200 phone calls, including explicit video calls, with prisoner Khuram Razaq and even sneaked a pair of knickers into his cell. One of her fellow female officers performed a sex act on an inmate in his cell.

A former prisoner, Tony Gooch, who had previously appeared in Channel 4’s Banged Up series, became involved in a six-month relationship with a married officer in her 30s while in jail and admitted he didn’t regret a thing.

Speaking previously with the Mirror, Tony revealed: "The minute we locked eyes on each other, you could just tell there was something there.

"We would get a quick 10 minutes together. We squeezed it in when we could."

The pair spent so much time together, despite the guard being stationed on another ward, that their closeness didn't go unnoticed by others at the prison. In the end, another prisoner got wind of the fling and told the other officers. "You don't want anyone else to know about the relationship because if someone is jealous, they'll more than likely grass you up to the officers. Which is what happened in my case.”

Gooch was forced into segregation for 16 weeks, which he described as "torture", while the officer in question was struck off, he says. He was then moved to HMP Wayland as a result.

He said: “What the public doesn't realise is that your life is made hell as an inmate too. You're going to get put in segregation for a long time, you're going to get shipped to another prison because you're deemed as a security risk – they don't know what that female officer has told you about the inner workings of the prison.

"It goes on to your record as well. It can cause a prisoner a lot, a lot of problems. It can jeopardise a de-cat, where you can be put into a lower category prison, so it's more secure [a Category D prison]. For an officer, they're immediately dismissed."

Tony added: “As long as there are females around males, there will always be an occasion when two individuals are attracted to each other and something's going to happen

“They could increase the prison sentences for female staff as a deterrent but look at British society as a whole – they give out 30 years for murder and people still kill so I don't think that would work. And it's not just officers, I know people who have had relationships with prison nurses, receptionists, probation officers. It can happen anywhere."

Criminologist Alex said female officers might be more prone to inappropriate relationships if they are "emotionally vulnerable or lonely".

She said: "Inmates may exploit these vulnerabilities, particularly if they sense that the officer is seeking emotional validation or attention.

"Ultimately, inappropriate relationships between female correctional officers and inmates are not primarily driven by physical attractiveness.

"Rather, they stem from emotional vulnerability, manipulation, power dynamics, and the stresses of the prison environment, all of which can contribute to boundary-crossing."
