Times Square mass shooting as 'bodies on the ground' in New York tourist spot
Three people have been reportedly shot in New York's iconic, and tourist-filled, Times Square, according to social media users, as police rushed to the area overnight
Multiple people have been shot in New York's iconic Times Square as horrific footage circulates social media.
There was a massive police response in the popular tourist area in the centre of the world-famous city. Bodies were reportedly left strewn across the street in the wake of the incident which took place at around 1.20am local time between West 44th Street and 7th Avenue.
Three people – a woman, 18 and two men, 19 and 65 – were injured in the violence as one person has been taken into custody. The woman suffered a wound to the neck while the two men were shot.
The gunfire erupted after a "verbal dispute between two people escalated", police told the Sun. The injured were taken to Bellevue Hospital where they remain in a stable condition. A suspect was arrested at the scene.
One person claimed to be a witness at the scene posted a video online stating three people were shot in the city this morning, with bullets piercing car windows.
They said posting on X, formerly Twitter: "Three people have been shot in the heart of Times Square. Bodies are on the ground, bullet holes pierce car windows. The chaos unfolded near a major tourist area. One suspect is in custody."
Social media reports indicate that three people have been injured in the incident, and that one person has been taken into custody. However, police are yet to issue a statement on the incident.
The alleged shooting comes just days after a major mass shooting in a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper.
The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, Nevada, killed four people before taking his own life on July 27 while wielding an assault rifle in the heart of the city.
New York City police officer Didarul Islam was among those who died in the horror attack.
