Truth about Lytham gimp as resident says he thinks he knows what happened
EXCLUSIVE: Stuart Chaliner said cats going missing in the town would be a big deal, so it was 'out of character' for a naked man to be spotted roaming the streets in just a gimp mask
A resident in a genteel seaside town which has been rocked by a phantom naked man wearing a “gimp” mask stalking its streets at night believes he knows what sparked the bizarre event.
Locals in Lytham, Lancs., previously told how the shadowy visitor left lace curtains twitching as the mystery streaker wearing a bondage hood became the talk of the town. He was first spotted after being captured on a car dashcam on Westby Street, in the heart of the Victorian resort, at just before 1am on Friday July 18.
A police probe was launched after clips of the incident was shared on the street’s WhatsApp group and more footage from the night was revealed, which was posted on Facebook and has since gone viral.
Stuart Chaliner, 54, a property developer who lives in the sleepy town, said: "Nothing like this happens ever. People leave their doors open. If a cat goes missing, it's a big deal and then something like this happens.
"It's probably the richest area in the north west after Alderley Edge. It's a very well to do area and this is really out of character for the area."
Lancashire Police said the incident took place on Westby Street, Cleveland Road and Bannister Street and the man is thought to still be at large.
Speculation has ran rife since the incident sparked headlines and one local previously told how a young man was seen walking round the streets fully clothed, appearing to be checking for cameras.
Locals in the town said they knew of no “alternative lifestyle” establishments which may provide a clue to the mystery.
But it is just down the coast from lively neighbour Blackpool, which is a mecca for stag parties which Stuart – who lives adjacent to Westby Street, where the man was seen prowling with his pecker out – believes gave a clue to the mystery.
He said: "I thought it was some random guy who had a bit too much to drink. I think it was a bit of drunken high jinx or a stag do. I don't think it's a weirdo stalking the streets."
We previously reported how Len Hammond, who has lived in Westby Street for 32 years, said: "You do sometimes see some right clowns round here."
He added: "We've never had anything like this. You can only assume he's done it for a dare or something. At least he didn't do anything like break in. But you'd get a shock if you came across someone like that."
A police spokesman said: “We are aware of a concerning video circulating on social media of a naked male wearing a face covering walking around Lytham in the early hours of the morning.
"This incident was not initially reported to police and has only been brought to our attention after it has been viewed on Facebook."
