The monk sex scandal has gripped Thailand after it emerged that several high profile monks were disrobed for their involvement with a woman arrested earlier this week

Several more monks have been disrobed as a result of a sex scandal rocking Thailand, with the woman at the centre claiming she gave birth to one of their children.

On Wednesday, the Daily Star revealed how a woman was arrested after seducing a hoard of celibate monks – and then demanded money to keep their affairs a secret. For the unaware, a celibate monk is someone who has taken vows to abstain from sexual activity as part of their monastic life, typically within a religious context.

Wilawan Emsawat allegedly took advantage of several monks, with her scheme only coming to light after police found evidence linking her to illicit payments from several senior monks in Thailand.

The woman was arrested in Nonthaburi, just outside of Bangkok, after her actions seemingly saw nine monks – including abbots – disrobed for breaking their celibacy vow.

Police Major General Charoonkiat Pankaew, Deputy Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, said in a press conference that she had been sent a whopping £8.8million (฿385million) over three years, but only around £1,000 was left in her bank account when she was arrested.

However, it has now emerged that the total of monks involved as risen to 12 – although one is still said to be missing.

According to local news outlets, an addition three monks are now thought to be involved – although they have not been named, and the woman has also been hit with another fraud charge to add to the ever-growing list.

For anyone wondering, a monk in Thailand can earn a fortune, and they do not pay taxes – hence why they are being targeted in extortion scams such as this.

She had already been arrested on charges of money laundering, receiving stolen items and abetting alleged abuse of authority by monks, although the latest fraud charge details have not yet been made public.

The scandal was uncovered when the abbot of the Wat Tri Thotsathep monastery in Bangkok went missing last month.

After an investigation, it emerged that Wilawan had tried to blackmail him after the pair had had a secret relationships – and she now claims to have had a child with the monk.

To keep it quiet, she demanded monthly payments of around £8,000 for the next 20 years, and when arrested police found five phones containing 80,000 pictures and videos of the woman with the abbot – and several more senior monks from various temples having various sexual encounters.

Police Major General Charoonkiat confirmed that she admitted to having sexual relations with the nine monks, eight of which have since left the monkhood - although more have now been connected to it.

One monk, Phra Ratcha Rattanasuthee, abbot of Phitsanulok Province, remains uncontactable.

The nine monks no longer in the monkhood are:

Phra Thep Wachirapamok, former abbot of Wat Trithat Thep Worawihan, Bangkok (disrobed June 29, 2025).
Phra Palat Suraphon, former abbot of Wat Phrom Kaset, Phitsanulok Province (disrobed July 5, 2025).
Phra Thep Wachirathiraphon, former abbot of Phra Phutthachai Temple, Saraburi Province (disrobed July 9, 2025).
Phra Thep Wachirathirakun, former assistant abbot of Wat Pak Nam, Phasi Charoen, Bangkok (disrobed July 9, 2025).
Phra Maha Boonlert, former monk at Wat Mai Yai Paen, Bangkok (disrobed July 9, 2025).
Phra Khru Siriwiriyathada, former assistant abbot of Wat Sothon Wararam Worawihan, Chachoengsao Province (disrobed July 10, 2025).

Phra Thepphacharaphon, former abbot of Wat Chuchittharam, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province (disrobed July 14, 2025).
Phra Thep Wachirasithimethi, former abbot of Wat Tha Luang, Phichit Province (disrobed July 15, 2025).

She is due in court later this year.
