UK pubs and restaurants flush it out to be top bog in Loo of the Year competition

Britain's best bogs have been handed a series of prestigious titles in the run-up to the Loo of the Year Awards in January, with many pubs celebrating victory in the first round

Britain's top toilets are set to go head-to-head in the Loo of the Year Awards, with the front-runners now announced.

The annual awards see the UK's best bogs fight to be crowned overall loo of the year, with the winner then handed the Golden Loo Seat Trophy. The victor is selected from a group of national winners and will be announced at a ceremony next year.

The front-runners are chosen from a group of top-tier lavatories which have now been announced. All entries to the competition are given a silver, gold, platinum or diamond grade, with the platinum and diamond-level bogs eligible to be selected for the big prizes.

All public loos are eligible for the prize, but many of the potential winners are found in pubs. One boozer now vying for the top spot is the John Wallace Linton, one of two Wetherspoons in Newport, south Wales, to receive a platinum rating.

Manager Olivia Hawkins was delighted at the news and told South Wales Argus: "We are delighted with the award. Staff at the pub ensure the toilets are in excellent condition at all times and it is great that this has been recognised by the inspectors." It's not the first time the pub has been recognised for its pristine privy either – the pub scooped up a "platinum plus" award last year.

And many customers agree the watering hole is a worthy winner. Taking to TripAdvisor, one visitor wrote: "Popped in one night to catch up with some lads I used to work with. Typical wetherspoons, nothing more or less Great central location and good range of ales Will be back." However others weren't convinced. One chimed in: "Toilets used to be spotless but are now dirty.....!! Please bring old staff back!!"

The John Wallace Linton has some stiff competition from the Friar Penketh, another Spoons in the running.

Plenty of other Wetherspoon outfits are being considered for the awards. The Samuel Lloyd in Corby and The Swan in Leighton Buzzard were also both handed platinum awards.

The Samuel Lloyd is one of two Spoons pubs in the town to have received a platinum title – despite being slammed the "worst Wetherspoons in the country." One disgruntled TripAdvisor customer wrote: "Toilets absolutely filthy. Coffee machine never works. More food is sent back to the kitchen than eaten. [...]. Worst spoons in the country."

However, another disagreed, chiming in: "Came here for breakfast with some friends before we went to watch football the breakfast was very nice just what I needed to soak up the beer lol."

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: "Wetherspoon is proud of the hundreds of awards for its toilets in the Loo of the Year awards. The toilets are independently inspected. The awards highlight Wetherspoon’s commitment to providing clean and well maintained toilets for its customers. TripAdvisor is based on some individual reviews and is not representative of the millions of customers who frequent Wetherspoon pubs each year."

But it's not just pubs that have been recognised – restaurants, museums, and even car parks are also eligible for first place. The parking area at Church Close Broadway Wychavon DC was examined by inspectors just three years after Wychavon District Council scooped up the overall UK Loo of the Year prize. They also won in the national category in 2022.

The winners will be announced on January 18 at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull. The Daily Star has contacted Wetherspoon for comment.
