Snow forecast maps from WXCharts have shown that the UK is set to see widespread snowfall in the coming days as the weather turns bitterly cold

New weather maps have painted a chilling picture of the UK, with 90 hours of snow forecast to hit.

WXCharts' snow forecast maps suggest that Brits could soon be seeing snowflakes as temperatures plummet. The maps indicate that snowfall is set to hit the UK from noon on October 10, covering much of the country, from Southampton to Inverness, in at least a light dusting.

The snowy spell is predicted to last until around 6am on October 14, with some lingering snow in the eastern parts of England as it moves away. This equates to a whopping 90 hours of snowfall, with the amount varying across the country as temperatures take a dive.

This comes as temperatures have taken a sudden dip, prompting many to reach for their winter coats and contemplate cranking up the heating.

A fleeting burst of warm weather was swiftly followed by heavy downpours, with some areas experiencing a month's worth of rainfall in just 24 hours.

The Met Office's latest forecast anticipates a period of calm weather leading into this weekend before things become unsettled once more.

Thursday is expected to be "bright" with "some patchy cloud developing through the day which could develop into the odd isolated shower, mainly toward southeast England", reports the Mirror.

The Met Office has forecast a mixed bag of weather for the UK, with Brits set to enjoy "dry with plenty of sunny spells on Friday and feeling warm in light winds" before the weather takes a turn.

Rain is expected to sweep in from the west over the weekend, accompanied by stronger gusts.

Looking further ahead to the period of October 7 to October 16, when WXCharts predicts snowfall, the Met Office warns: "An Atlantic low pressure system will drift eastwards across the UK through the first part of next week.

"This will bring widely unsettled conditions, with showers or longer spells of rain, heavy and persistent at times, especially over hills.

"Strong winds are possible too, with exposed and windward coastal areas prone to the strongest winds.

"The theme of low pressure will continue to dominate the weather for the rest of the week, with showers or longer spells of rain.

"There is a possibility that a deeper low pressure system, ex-Hurricane Kirk, will move close to the UK around mid-week, bringing further spells of wet and windy weather.

"Alternatively, this system could remain to the west of the UK. However, the theme of unsettled weather is expected to prevail."
