Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro and his wife have been captured and flown out of the country by Delta Force, according to an extraordinary post from Donald Trump.

The US President took to Truth Social to gloat about the US military action in the South American nation, which saw people evacuated and power cuts during a series of airstrikes overnight.

CBS reports that the Venezuelan President was captured by Delta Force, America's top military special mission unit, in echoes of the historic capture of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Posting online, Orange Manbaby Trump said: "The United States of America has successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country.

"This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement. Details to follow. There will be a News Conference today at 11 A.M., at Mar-a-Lago. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP"

Venezuela has been rocked by a series of explosions this morning, with locals reporting at least seven blasts and low-flying aircraft over the capital city of Caracas.

Maduro had declared a state of emergency and called on people to help "defeat this imperialist aggression".

The Venezuelan government issued a statement, saying it "repudiates and denounces to the international community the very serious military aggression".

"The whole country must be active to defeat this imperialist aggression," it added.

Eyewitnesses recounted being jolted awake by the sounds of explosions and aircraft buzzing overhead in the early hours.

According to CNN, the initial wave of explosions took place around 1:50am local time, with authorities yet to provide an explanation.

It's believed that Fort Tiuna - home to the Venezuelan ministry of defence - is among the areas affected, while a section of southern Caracas, near a significant military base, has been plunged into darkness due to a power cut, reports the Mirror.

The US been has been pressuring Maduro to step down through an aggressive military campaign.

The US has struck more than 30 boats in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean in what it has said is a counter-narcotics campaign. Trump has also ordered a blockade of sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela.

The US president has repeated threatened to carry out strikes inside Venezuela, but the only known US strikes on Venezuelan targets were against the suspected drug trafficking boats in international waters, before the hit carried out by the CIA.
