Chelsea, who trailed Aston Villa 2-0 with half an hour remaining, mounted a stirring fightback and thought they had won it when Axel Disasi headed home from close range

Furious Chelsea players surrounded referee Craig Pawson at full-time after seeing a late winner at Aston Villa controversially ruled out.

After Axel Disasi headed home in added time, Pawson, who initially gave the goal, was advised by VAR to check his pitchside monitor. After seeing the replay, he ruled that Benoit Badiashile had committed a foul in the build-up to the goal, which was chalked off.

The Blues trailed to Marc Cucurella’s early own goal in the Premier League’s Saturday night game and Morgan Rogers doubled the lead when he slotted home from the edge of the box shortly before half-time.

Villa were surprisingly pegged back as Chelsea rallied. Noni Madueke halved the deficit just past the hour mark and Conor Gallagher made it 2-2 with a stunning strike on 81 minutes. The Blues stayed on the front foot and thought they won it through Disasi.

Their frustration boiled over after the final whistle with players confronting Pawson in scenes that could land them in hot water with the FA. Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Madueke said: "Should it have been three points? Yes. Do I think the goal should have stood? Yes. Nothing else to say about the situation."

Meanwhile, Gallagher said: "We had chances to win and we showed great character. The goal at the end should have counted, but it is not my decision. We can hold our heads high and take a lot of confidence from that."

The harshest criticism came from Mauricio Pochettino, who said the use of VAR was "damaging English football". The former Tottenham boss fumed: "The referee is unbelievable and it's ridiculous. It is difficult to accept, these type of things in the semi-final [FA Cup against Man City], it was handball and it was no penalty. The referee, he didn't check it.

"It is painful as it has damaged English football and I think Villa players and their fans didn't understand why the goal was disallowed.

"They said it was foul and if you see the challenge what happened if we go into every single challenge like this, it is going to be a foul and we wouldn't finish the game with 11 [players]. We can talk about the performance or the decision - it is damaging the game."
