Arne Slot's shocking tactical decision as Liverpool sleepwalk into poor Spurs draw

Liverpool have dropped points to Tottenham Hotspur in a torrid performance that saw them sleepwalk into a draw against the relegation-battling side

Liverpool and Spurs tend to produce goals - and based off Tottenham's recent performances, there were a few fans predicating a cricket score.

However, it was the same old story for Liverpool this season, the Reds looked disjointed against a team that had seemingly resigned themselves to unthinkable relegation during the week.

Dominik Szoboszlai sent Liverpool ahead with a moment of magic, but it all came crumbling apart thanks to a ghost of Liverpool's past when former Evertonian Richarlison bundled the ball past Alisson in the final minutes of the game.

Liverpool look like a team without a clear style of play. They’re short of ideas, which made Arne Slot’s decision to hand youngster Rio Ngumoha his first Premier League start all the more intriguing.

Ngumoha proved to be a bright spark for Slot’s side, injecting creativity into a team that has been desperately searching for a catalyst. Comparisons will inevitably be drawn with Max Dowman, who so brilliantly inspired Arsenal’s success on Saturday.

The youngster was direct and fearless, never looking fazed as he took the game to the opposition. In truth, he was arguably Liverpool’s best player before being substituted in the second half.

The Reds are chasing Europe, and they should have put this poor Spurs team to the sword.

And yet they let Spurs make a game of it - it was end to end, when it should have been put to bed. Against better opposition, these sorts of performances will be punished.

If Liverpool are serious about securing European football next season, these are the games that must be finished early - not turned into nervy finales or drawn out battles.

The result for Slot is borderline inexcusable, and for Igor Tudor it is invaluable.

Liverpool had the chance to break into top four, leapfrogging Aston Villa who dropped points to the Reds age-old rivals Manchester United earlier on in the day. Instead, Slot's going back to the drawing board.

And the Reds are looking at potential season without Champions League football, 12 months after they were crowned as kings of England.
