Edu's model daughter slammed Arsenal fans over abuse after Gunners' Premier League defeat
Arsenal director Edu's model daughter Maria received abuse after a Premier League defeat and the teenager took to social media to defend her father
The model daughter of outgoing Arsenal sporting director Edu has never had a great relationship with Gunners fans.
Maria Gaspar was hounded with abuse back in 2021 after Arsenal lost to rivals Chelsea, with fans blaming her father Edu for a string of failed transfers at the time. The Brazilian is a former Gunners player and made 127 appearances during a four-year stint in North London between 2001 and 2005, in which he became an 'Invincible' under Arsene Wenger.
He returned to the club in 2019 to take up his current position and has helped oversee the club's transformation under boss Mikel Arteta. However, coinciding with a disappointing run of results this season, it's been reported he is set to take up a new position at Nottingham Forest after his shock departure from Arsenal.
The torrent of abuse hurled at his 18-year-old daughter over the years hasn't been cited as one of the reasons for his departure, but certainly affected her and Edu's family.
Maria pleaded with her fans on social media following the comments three years ago, saying: "Guys, unfortunately, if it continues like this I will have to deactivate my comments from my photos and leave it to the people I follow because I can’t stand it, I can’t stand any more insult
"Every day I used to go in to answer some people who send me messages on the direct message, but nowadays I can’t go in there anymore, there’s only cursing. I don’t have much patience anymore, if I answer them all I'll spend more than a day losing my mind with it, so I just ignore it."
Maria added: "My father has been in this life for a long time, with criticism and praise, you know, but for me, I'm not used to it and it’s a business that hurts a lot, but that’s how we learn.
She added: "Stop sending me the direct messages saying, 'What happened?' For God’s sake, read and you will know! I don't have the head to explain each one because they are cursing my father, there are people who are still asking me, 'Why are they swearing?'
"Look at everything my father has won, look at everything my father has done. I'm not here to talk about it, I know about my father’s potential and all that but we will have to stay in this life full of highs and lows, full of criticism and praise."
Her father Edu has been credited with some great signings during his time at Arsenal, notably star midfielders Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, but he is also responsible for some awful ones. The Brazilian sanctioned the failed signings of his compatriots Davis Luiz and Willian who arrived on big wages from rivals Chelsea.
His relationship with Arsenal fans has turned sour in recent seasons and he's decided to make a swift exit as a result. Maria continued to explain that while her dad may be used to criticism due to his long football career, she isn't.
