The Manchester United squad have their doubts over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's ability to tangle tactically with their Premier League title rivals after losing 5-0 to Liverpool

Manchester United players don't believe that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is good enough to tangle tactically with Premier League rivals such as Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, according to reports.

The United boss has come under scrutiny more than ever before after overseeing the club's worst-ever result at Old Trafford against rivals Liverpool last week.

The Reds ran riot in a 5-0 thumping against United to leave Solskjaer on the brink - although it has since emerged that the Norwegian has been spared from the sack for now.

As well as concerns over Solskjaer in the boardroom, it's now materialised that there are concerns amongst United players, too.

A report from The Times reveals that some players have aired their concerns over their manager in a private discussion following Sunday's embarrassment.

Solskjaer's capability to match the tactical acumen of some of United's title rivals is in serious doubt, with a number of United's squad convinced that their boss lacks the nous to outwit the likes Klopp, Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel.

It's hard to disagree with them with United already eight points adrift from league leaders Chelsea. Liverpool and Manchester City are also well ahead of United in the early rankings.

Solskjaer was expected to mount a serious title challenge this year after being backed significantly in the summer transfer window.

But despite splashing out on deals for Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, United still look well off the required pace to challenge for honours.

United have recorded just three wins in their past nine games to leave the Old Trafford board pondering possible replacements for Solskjaer.

But the United chief remains defiant - just as he was following Sunday's chastening defeat where he refused to walk away despite suffering what he called "his darkest day".

Despite Solskjaer's stance, former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte has emerged as a potential replacement this week, with some reports suggesting that United had sounded him out about a potential deal.

And ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino also has admirers at Old Trafford.

It seems for now at least that Solskjaer has been given a chance to save his job with this weekend's trip to Tottenham.

But he'll be more than aware that a similarly calamitous result against Spurs, or in future games against Atalanta in the Champions League or rivals Manchester City would prove terminal.
