Diego Leon was signed by Manchester United in January and will officially join the club on July 1 - the 18-year-old has been compared to Wayne Rooney in his homeland

Manchester United have kicked off the summer transfer window with a bang, snapping up Matheus Cunha from Wolves.

The Brazilian international officially donned the Red Devils' jersey earlier this week and after netting 17 goals for Wolves last season, he's set to inject some much-needed firepower into United's squad.

Cunha is expected to fill one of the attacking midfield slots in Ruben Amorim's 3-4-2-1 formation, and United are keeping their fingers crossed that Brentford ace Bryan Mbeumo will also join the ranks to partner him.

The Cameroon international, who bagged 20 goals in the Premier League last season, is reportedly keen on a switch to United. However, Tottenham and Newcastle are also said to be in the running, with the Bees holding firm on their asking price for the 25 year old.

Yet, it could be a signing sealed back in January that might turn out to be the real coup of this window, reports the Manchester Evening News.

United unveiled the acquisition of Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon for an initial £3.3million, potentially rising to £7million with add-ons, and he's set to officially link up with the club on July 1.

Since then, the 18-year-old has been clocking regular game time for Cerro Porteno in the Paraguayan top flight, gaining priceless first team experience.

There's a buzz about his potential back in his homeland, and it's perhaps slipped under the radar that he'll be making the move to Old Trafford in just over a fortnight's time.

Indeed, Paraguayan football expert Ralph Hannah, co-host of the English-speaking Paraguayan football podcast Guaraní Vision, drew comparisons to a 'teenage Wayne Rooney' when speaking about Leon back in January.

No one is predicting he'll reach the dizzying heights of United's top scorer, especially given their different positions on the pitch, but it's hard to ignore the similarities between Leon's early impact on senior football and his physical resemblance to Rooney's explosive emergence at Everton.

Leon operates as a left-wing-back and will have to jostle for position with Patrick Dorgu, Luke Shaw and Harry Amass.

It's more probable that he'll start off with the under-21s, but Amorim has proven he's not shy about giving the young guns a shot when they're up to scratch, having already handed debuts to teen talents Amass, Chido Obi, Tyler Fredricson and Ayden Heaven this season.

If Leon can live up to the hype, it could be the first triumph of Ineos' strategy to snap up young players with high potential and low transfer fees.
