Rodri sent off for choking Morgan Gibbs-White – and Man City star will miss Arsenal clash
Manchester City have been dealt a huge blow ahead of their clash with Arsenal with star player Rodri picking up a red card after a moment of immense head-loss against Forest
Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been sent off for choking Morgan Gibbs-White in the Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest.
The 27-year-old was shown a straight red card while his side were 2-0 up at the Etihad. His moment of madness occurred just after the half-time break, with the Spaniard being involved in a bust-up in the corner.
Rodri put both of his hands on the Under-21 European Championship winner's neck as the pair squared up to each other. And after a brief VAR check, he was given his marching orders.
The veteran is set to miss the three next domestic fixtures with suspension. It comes as a huge blow to Pep Guardiola's side, who have become reliant on his assuredness in midfield.
Rodri's missed fixtures will include an EFL Cup tie against Newcastle United, a league visit to Wolves, and one of the most important games of the season against Arsenal on October 8.
The trip to the Emirates would have been the one City drew their eyes towards as soon as the fixtures were announced for the season. The Gunners were their main Premier League rivals last season, leading the league for the majority of the campaign before a late collapse handed City their third consecutive title.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will be licking his lips at the prospect of facing his former club without one of their integral cogs. Yet City still have plenty of fire power to cause the north Londoners problems in two weeks' time.
They proved just that by scoring two goals in the first quarter of an hour against Forest on Saturday afternoon. It was Rodri's sumptuous pass which found Kyle Walker, who then set up Phil Foden for the opener seven minutes in.
Erling Haaland scored his eighth Premier League goal already this season when he powered in a smart chipped cross from new-boy Matheus Nunes minutes later. Despite being a man down, City were able to hold on to their 2-0 lead to maintain a perfect record of six wins in six matches.
Arsenal can close the gap at the top back down to two points on Sunday, though. That's if they win the north London derby and beat rivals Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium (2pm).
