Sheikh Jassim 'set to win' Man Utd takeover race with £5billion deal now imminent
After months of battling with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim has reportedly emerged victorious and will take Manchester United off the Glazers' hands
Sheikh Jassim has finally won the race to buy Manchester United in a £5billion deal, according to reports in his native Qatar.
The Middle Eastern banker has been embroiled in a largely two-horse race with Britain's richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe for a number of months after the Glazers put the Red Devils up for sale.
He submitted a fifth and final offer last week in an attempt to swing the bidding back in his favour. And it appears to have worked, as it's been claimed "successful" talks mean the takeover will be done "soon".
The report, however, does need to be taken with a pinch of salt, as it comes from Qatari outlet Al-Watan – an organisation that his father, the country’s former Prime Minister Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, owns.
The Sheikh's latest proposal is believed to be around the £5bn mark and for 100% of the club. In comparison, Ratcliffe was looking to purchase a 60% stake which would have seen the highly unpopular Glazer family remain at the table.
The former has been favoured amongst the United fanbase, who are keen to see the back of their current owners. It's a deal which will also see all of their debt, believed to be in the region of £537.5m, wiped out.
The lengthy process, which began all the way back in November, coming to an end imminently would be a relief for everyone involved at Old Trafford with the summer transfer window opening tomorrow (June 14).
Manager Erik ten Hag recently admitted he currently has no idea what his budget is, telling reporters: “No, I don’t have an influence on that, I don’t have and also I don’t know.
“I think it’s clear what I want, but it’s not up to me. It’s about others in this club. The family are the owners, they make the decisions, and it’s not up to me. I do everything I can and I influence the processes that I’m in charge of.”
United are set to undergo somewhat of an overhaul this summer, with a number of first team stars set to leave. The likes of Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount and Eintracht Frankfurt forward Randal Kolo Muani have been linked as potential signings.
