Arsenal have finally agreed a deal with Sporting for Viktor Gyokeres and the Swedish striker will undergo a medical on Saturday to complete his move to the Emirates

Arsenal are on the brink of signing Viktor Gyokeres after the Swedish striker was finally given the green light by Sporting CP to have a medical.

The Gunners have been deep in negotiations with the Portuguese champions for the 27-year-old centre-forward, who has already verbally committed to a five-year deal ahead of his switch to the Emirates. The North London club and Sporting reached an agreement worth an upfront £55million plus £8.7m in add-ons almost two weeks but talks continued over the specifics of those bonuses.

However, the Gunners, eager to get Gyokeres over to Asia for their pre-season tour, have now ironed out the final details and sealed the deal with Sporting after some tough bargaining.

Sporting reportedly received Arsenal's official written proposal on Tuesday night, and since then, legal teams from both clubs have been poring over the nitty-gritty of the paperwork.

The former Coventry City striker is set to have his medical on Saturday, and if all goes well, he'll be Mikel Arteta's sixth summer signing. It's believed that once the deal is officially signed, he'll be donning the club's legendary number 14 shirt, immortalised by Gunners' icon Thierry Henry, reports the Mirror.

Arsenal are set to face AC Milan in their opening pre-season friendly on Wednesday, followed by a clash with Newcastle in Singapore. They'll then take on Tottenham in Hong Kong on 31 July, with hopes high that Gyokeres will be signed up in time to join the squad in the Far East.

The formidable forward has racked up an impressive 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting, along with 28 assists during his two-year stint in Lisbon.

The Swedish star clinched back-to-back Primera Liga titles and the Taca de Portugal before going on strike to secure his return to England.

Manchester United had expressed interest in reuniting Gyokeres with his former manager Ruben Amorim, but after several rounds of talks with both Arteta and Gunners' sporting director Andrea Berta, the player set his sights solely on Arsenal.

Remarkably, Gyokeres will be the first out-and-out striker signed by the club since January 2018 when Arsenal snapped up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.

The Gunners had also pondered a move for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, but decided against proceeding due to the quoted transfer figures.

Gyokeres is set to join Cristhian Mosquera, the 21-year-old Valencia centre-back who has now jetted off to Singapore to link up with the squad, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christian Norgaard in putting pen to paper at the Emirates this summer.
